About this deal

In 1638, the woman and her servant drink their potion and are surrounded by a glowing miasma. They begin to travel forwards through time. They appear in present-day Windsor in the middle of a crowded cafe. Rhamnus or Rhamnous ( Ancient Greek: Ῥαμνοῦς) or Rhamnuntus or Rhamnountos (Ῥαμνοῦντος) was a deme of ancient Attica, belonging to the tribe Aeantis. [3] [4]

The Doctor asks what will happen if he gives her the bow, to which Peinforte replies his power will be hers, but his secrets remain his own. Appearing to concede defeat, the Doctor says he is surrendering, but not to Peinforte, rather to the Cybermen. Peinforte threatens to reveal his secrets, so he calls her bluff. She says that she will tell them of Gallifrey, of the Old Time, the time of Chaos. However, the Cyber-Leader says that the secrets of the Time Lords are of no interest of the Cybermen. Lady Peinforte shows her servant, Richard Maynarde, his grave. The Sixth Doctor explained to Peri that if he took her to Earth after she had died, she could see her own gravestone. ( TV: Revelation of the Daleks) The Eleventh Doctor would later see his own tomb on Trenzalore. ( TV: The Name of the Doctor) The Cyber-Leader recognises the Doctor, even though his appearance has changed, and tells the onlookers that the Cybermen had predicted his presence. The Nazis open fire on the Cybermen but their bullets are ineffective. The Cybermen open fire and drive the Nazis away. The Doctor says that this happened before, but before it was the Roundheads and Lady Peinforte. Peinforte shoots one of the Cybermen with a bow and arrow and the Doctor recognises the arrows to be gold-tipped, a major weakness for Cybermen. But so does De Forres. Miles estimates that construction cost about 30 talents, a substantial but not outrageous sum. Costs were kept low by making the temple comparatively small and using local materials. The temple was not actually completed: the fluting on the columns is unfinished and the steps are not smoothed. A festival called Nemeseia (by some identified with the Genesia) was held at Athens. Its object was to avert the nemesis of the dead, who were supposed to have the power of punishing the living, if their cult had been in any way neglected ( Sophocles, Electra, 792; E. Rohde, Psyche, 1907, i. 236, note I).It was chiefly celebrated in antiquity on account of its nearby sanctuary for the worship of Nemesis, who was hence called by the Latin poets Rhamnsusia virgo and dea Rhamnusia. [7] Their historic loss at Marathon was, in part, the work of Nemesis. The hubris they had shown in assuming they would win the battle had drawn her attention and she had punished them for it with defeat. The badly damaged remains of an over life-size marble head from a cult statue of Nemesis, with perforations for attaching a gold crown, was discovered by the British architect John Gandy in the early nineteenth century and is now part of the British Museum's collection. [17] This has a stylistic similarity to the pediment sculptures of the Parthenon of 440–432 BC. Despinis, G. "Discovery of the Scattered Fragments and Recognition of the Type of Agorakritos' Statue of Nemesis." AAA 3 (1970), 403–414. Pre-production was complicated when the discovery of asbestos at BBC Television Centre forced the rearrangement of the recording dates for The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. As a result, the availability of Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred for rehearsals was severely limited. Indeed, Dolores Gray became confused after mistakenly assuming that assistant floor manager Lynn Grant (who was reading Aldred's lines in her absence) was actually playing Ace.

As the Doctor and Ace arrive at the crypt, the jazz tape finishes playing and the Cybermen's communications begin working. The Doctor enters the crypt holding the bow, and, manoeuvring past the Cybermen with Ace, places the bow in the statue's hands but snatches it away again. The statue awakens and begins to follow the bow. This probably had a lot to do with the differences between Greek and Roman society and values. The Roman religion and society placed less emphasis on divine retribution than the Greeks had, so Nemesis lost much of her purpose when taken out of the context of Hellenic society. The Doctor once knew Louis Armstrong, who, according to him, had a very good understanding of Time.
