Hodgkins, Crystalyn (4 April 2019). "Kodansha Adds Ninja Slayer Kills, Cat Diary: Yon & Mu, 3 Persona/SMT Manga". Anime News Network. Archived from the original on 2 August 2019 . Retrieved 2 August 2019.

Despite being a manga about two adorable felines and his wife, Ito uses the same drawing style and presentation as for his horror manga. The wife has pupil-less eyes and a demonic grin. The cats are constantly drawn as creepy, fearsome beings internally plotting among themselves for their owner's demise. Frequently, Ito draws himself as an insane monster. This What I'll say is that, personally, there was a LOT of interviews with Junji Ito rather than manga panels. I didn't understand why that was necessary. A few quotes here or there would have sufficed. Style [ edit ] J-kun attempts to play with the cats, to no avail; his mouth becomes more horrific as he fails to capture their interest. Cuteness Proximity: With a healthy dose of Nightmare Face. J-kun immediately falls for Mu when seeing his reaction to getting kisses.

it is an autobiographical tale of what happens to a dog-person when his fiancée brings her two cats into their home Yon's Great Escape" centers on Yon's escape from the house. Both J-kun and A-ko search for him, eventually retrieving him from a storehouse. Ito, Junji (2015). "Bonus Manga". Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu. Kodansha Comics USA. pp.115–121. ISBN 978-1-63236-197-4. The Unreveal: Gorou, the skittish and elusive stray cat A-ko's parents adopted, is always drawn as a shadowy blob to represent J-kun's unfamiliarity with him. Despite J-kun's attempts to befriend him and then lamenting that he still hasn't gotten a good look at him in over a year, the reader never sees him drawn as an actual cat, remaining a shadow even when Mu plays with him.

What Measure Is a Non-Cute?: J-kun initially wants nothing to do with Yon, who's not very cute, even disregarding his spookiness, but he gradually warms up to him. a b c d e f Silverman, Rebecca (16 January 2016). "Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu". Anime News Network. Archived from the original on 29 July 2019 . Retrieved 9 November 2019. But how can a horror artist tell the story of two cats coming to live in his house? As if the cats were monsters, of course, out to destroy him, and so on. It's pretty adorable stuff, facetious and tongue-in-cheek and all. He does it to look like a horror comic, as if this is how he can't help but see the world, but in fact he falls in love with kitties, aw. Ito becomes a cat person! Not such a creepy scary guy, after all. Here though he’s telling simple and comedic moments about his own life with his fiancée and her two cats… but he’s a horror artist through and through, so how does he tell this tale? As if the cats are monsters invading his life. He frequently will draw them ominously staring at him, he will draw distorted faces in horror (and his fiancée is almost always drawn with just blank white eyes). Despite the imagery (and maybe even because of it) the comedy works even better as these monstrous creatures slowly win over his dog loving heart. I found myself smiling or laughing more than I was wincing and cringing at the horror or scare tactics. That's a good sign to me. It shows depth and a compassion that makes you more invested in the characters and storyline.Junji Ito's Cat Diary". Kodansha USA. Archived from the original on 29 July 2019 . Retrieved 2 August 2019. Lightmare Fuel: In essence, Ito parodies his own work by writing and drawing in the same style as his iconic horror fiction...except that it's an (almost) completely harmless story about him and his wife taking care of their cute kitties.

this is a comedic-horror manga, and it speaks to those of us who have invited these little devils into our hearts and homes, and the everyday horrors we endure as a result. Irony: J-kun, who abhors the idea of having two cats, let alone the one with the spooky vibe, also gets insanely jealous when he doesn't appeal to them. Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu" (in Italian). Panini Comics. Archived from the original on 29 July 2019 . Retrieved 29 July 2019. This is not a horror story. Or maybe it is – famed horror mangaka Junji Ito ( Uzumaki, Gyo) has never lived with cats before his fiancée A-ko tells him that her family cat Yon will be moving to their new home, which they already share with Junji (J-kun in the story)'s mother and a long-haired chihuahua named Sakura. If you've never lived with a cat, or even really interacted with one, which is basically Junji, that can be pretty scary – they have claws and sharp teeth, they're unpredictable, and they make weird noises. The stuff of horror indeed. This work showcases that perfectly. While he contains nightmarish depths, this displays how undeniably human he is.King Yon" chronicles Yon's further unsuccessful attempt to escape, his unusual strength, and his position as dominant cat within the household. Junji Ito is a horror manga artist known best for exceptionally creative and terrifying works such as Uzumaki and Tomie. I've read almost everything of his that has been released in America (still waiting for my bf to finish one anthology so he can lend it to me). His works are creepy, disturbing, spectacularly drawn, and always something I have never seen before. This book is no exception, just that it is also very funny. Affectionate Parody: Of Ito's own work as a horror mangaka, since he still draws this series in his usual horror-oriented art style despite it being an autobiographical Slice of Life. A-ko, J-kun's wife: No irises, and ALWAYS smiling. Junji Ito notes in the "questions to the author" sections that his wife was irritated by this depiction. In "The Events of One Late Night," J-kun tries to bribe the cats to sleep on his bed, rather than A-ko's, to no avail.

I have been successfully creeped out by horror manga-ka Ito's Uzumaki (a town driven to madness by spirals) and Museum of Terror (boys driven to madness and murder by a girl/femme fatale), so I just added this to my tbr list, and was surprised to find it is basically diary comics, the funny story of how dog person Ito got pushed into living with two cats by his wife.
