But what is right for one, isn’t right for all. There is a place for it, for a small group of people. While D3 has amazing benefits to consider for your health, it is CRITICAL to consider K2 with any D3 supplement plan. I’m going to explain why, review some scenarios, and give you general guidelines on how much to take for each scenario. Want to learn more about vitamin D3 and K2? If you have consistently high 1,25 OH vitamin D (active; calcitriol), this acts to release more calcium into the bloodstream. If you do not vitamin K2 available to activate vitamin K2-dependent proteins, calcium builds up. The K2 is also less available to scavenge for free radicals, produce energy, and promote blood sugar and brain health. Vitamin K2 Supplementation

Since we’re talking about interactions, you might be interested in my article, Avoid Dangerous Interactions When Taking Supplements.

When either 25-oH or 1,25OH are above the clinical ranges, seek out professional screening and investigation. Remember, context is always key. Vitamin K1 has an important role in helping with blood coagulation. . It supports blood clotting and prevents excessive bleeding, bruising, or, in extreme cases, hemorrhaging.

Vitamin K2-MK7 also fuels mitochondria—the “batteries” that supply energy to all of the cells in your body, including muscles. One muscle in particular has a lot of mitochondria: your heart. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections. Unfortunately, they don’t just eliminate bad bacteria. They also kill off the flourishing colonies of beneficial bacteria that our bodies need to maintain optimal health. When taken within recommended dosage guidelines, vitamin D3 and K2 supplements are generally safe for most individuals. However, excessive intake can lead to adverse effects, such as hypercalcemia (excess calcium in the blood). It's essential to follow the instructions on the product label and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Can I get enough vitamin D and K through diet alone? These are the most potent dietary sources of K2(based on 100-gram servings unless otherwise indicated). I don’t normally recommend combo supplements of vitamin D3 with vitamin K (either K1 or K2). I get asked all the time why my brand of D3 doesn’t have K in it, and it would have been cheap and easy to put it in there but I chose not to, because of SO many reasons which I’ll discuss today, but mainly because the combination can increase risk of kidney stones (within a few years) and may contribute to coronary artery calcifications. It’s all because the two of those nutrients together add more calcium to your blood, and that’s not something you want!

Scenarios #3-5 focus on increasing K2 need (D3 may still benefit from higher intakes too to optimize levels). Vitamin K2 is a powerhouse nutrient that offers a wide range of health-enhancing benefits. If dietary changes alone aren’t enough for you to reach the optimum intake, consider supplements to reach the recommended daily dosage and boost your overall healthcare.

If I am going to be taking a supplement on an on-going basis, I want to know why its important to invest the time and money in the first place. Secondly, I want to know if I’m getting enough. Active 1,25 OH Vitamin D (calcitriol) as an Indirect Marker of K2 Emulsified Liquid Vitamin D3 + K2 MK7 Liposomal Supplement for Heart, Bone Health + Immune Support – Bioactive 2500IU for Enhanced Absorption (1.7oz/50ml) To control calcium balance (as well as bone and cardiovascular health), you must have sufficient vitamin K2 to activate the relevant vitamin K2- dependent proteins! Vitamin D3: Look for supplements that contain cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) rather than ergocalciferol (vitamin D2). This form has been shown to have higher bioavailability and effectiveness. That’s where vitamin K2 comes in. It acts as an air traffic controller, directing calcium exactly where it needs to go. In your body, it prevents calcium deposits from forming in your blood vessels, kidneys, liver, or other soft tissue. It even works to remove calcium from your arteries. In turn, it directs calcium to the places of your body where it can do the most good. Prevents Heart Disease Since “active” 1,25 OH vitamin D (calcitriol) increases calcium in the blood, a HIGH level of the 1,25 OH vitamin D (active; calcitriol) marker is a general sign that the body is still looking for more calcium or calcium is not finding its way to where it needs to be. High intake of magnesium may also call for some calcium supplementation as higher magnesium intakes will drive down calcium absorption (generally 800mg of magnesium, 200-400mg of calcium citrate or otherwise). If I’m supplementing for calcium, I generally switch the intake levels to 800mg of calcium and 400 mg of magnesium.
