You may also sleep poorly if your blanket makes you uncomfortably hot — again, that's not the intention here. That said, some anxiety sufferers prefer using a heavier blanket for a stronger 'grounding' effect. Many brands offer a trial period so that you can find the right weight for you. Who shouldn't use a weighted blanket? Weight options: 10 choices ranging from 5 to 30 lbs | Material: Cotton outer fabric (no duvet cover included) | Fill: Glass beads | Colors: 25 options | Care: Machine washable For added convenience, the cover can be removed and machine-washed at 30°C. It’s one of the most expensive blankets on our list, but if you’re prepared to pay a bit of a hefty price for a weighted blanket, you can’t really go wrong here.

The blanket comes in just two weights: 12 or 20 pounds. There's no 15-pound weight available, which is typically the most popular size for weighted blankets and what most of our testers prefer. Still, users liked sleeping under this blanket, saying it worked effectively and felt comfortable. A weighted blanket is like a regular blanket, except they have glass (or sometimes plastic) beads stitched inside to give them added weight when you pull it around you. The more beads inside, the heavier they are. A note of caution: Weighted blankets shouldn’t be used by anyone who can’t move freely beneath the weight. Even though they're sometimes used as a therapeutic tool for kids, it's important to first speak with a medical professional, like a child's pediatrician, before trying it out. Shoppers seeking a weighted blanket that won’t lead to excessive overheating should look no further than the Hush Iced 2.0 Cooling Weighted Blanket. From the lightweight cover to the cool fill material, this blanket was designed with hot sleepers in mind. The blanket is available in two sizes, each with a unique weight. The single blanket weighs 12 pounds, making it ideal for solo sleepers in the range of 100 to 140 pounds. If you weigh more than 140 pounds or enjoy sharing your weighted blanket with a sleep partner, the larger 20-pound blanket might be a better fit. This option is comparable to an oversize queen/king, so there’s plenty of coverage for two people.

The best weighted blankets you can buy in 2023

If you've never tried a weighted blanket before, you may be wondering if it's for you. We asked sleep expert James Wilson (aka The Sleep Geek) to share his advice.

We liked: The whole blanket is machine washable, which is handy if you don’t want to buy a cover. It’s white, so it’s a good neutral that will go with whatever room scheme you have if you want to leave it out (and there’s a dedicated bed comforter version designed for just that purpose). Using "deep pressure therapy" to "ground" those who use them, weighted blankets essentially replicate the feeling of a big, warm hug, stimulating the production of dopamine and serotonin, the "happy" hormones. What is a weighted blanket? The general rule of thumb is to choose a weighted blanket that is roughly 10 percent of your own body weight. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. Realistically, a blanket weighing between 5 and 12 percent of your body weight may be comfortable. The best way to determine your optimal blanket is to test out different weights. Chunky knit weighted blankets have gained popularity because they look more upscale yet deliver the same benefits. This one from Bearaby is entirely made of fabric (no bead fills) and is a blend of cotton and Tencel lyocell, a super soft fiber that's both smooth and cooling. Our testers agreed, highlighting the appearance, softness and cooling capabilities as their favorite aspects. One described it as having "the right amount of weight and warmth, without ever feeling too heavy or hot," while another added, "It’s not too heavy, and it’s easy to move around my bed. I sleep so well under it." When it comes to evaluating the weighted blankets in our Lab, we consider aspects like the outer cover fabric, fill materials, construction, care instructions, whether it connects to a duvet cover and more. Consumer testers sleep with the weighted blanket for several weeks before filling out their surveys. They score the blankets on factors like comfort, weight distribution, whether the fill stayed in place, fabric feel, temperature regulation and other qualities. They also have the opportunity to expand on anything they liked or disliked.
