Description

Beginning at the top of the staircase, lay the first length of carpet with its pile facing down the stairs. A carpet wears better with the pile facing down the stairs. To find out which direction the pile is facing, simply run the palm of your hand over the pile. The direction in which the pile feels smoother to the touch is the direction it is facing. PU Foam Underlay: Modern with excellent thermal and acoustic properties and very compfy underfoot but quite expensive

The underlay should now be laid inside the gripper. Use double sided tape on all joins underneath the underlay. The below is an image of what we are aiming to achieve with each of the steps below and shows where each item should be fixed. You can use a strong double-sided tape for underlay and carpet but this isn’t an ideal solution. It may work for a while especially if the carpet isn’t walked on frequently. Now head to the corner at the other end on the longest side and do the same again to stretch. Now stretch the areas in between. At the end of the day, it’s really entirely up to you what type of carpet you use to cover your stairs, however, if you are undecided then there are a few rules to work by.On reaching the curve (it may be at the bottom of the stairs, at the top or there may be a curve at the top and bottom of the stairs) use the carpet bolster and hammer to force the carpet between the gripper strip and the angle where the tread meets the riser.

Use a piece of wood as a spacer to help get the same measurement around the whole room. Make sure that the angled edge is pointing towards the skirting board and nail in place. Carpet gripper – This will hold your stair carpet in place Tools and Equipment Needed for Carpeting Stairs

Tools and Equipment Needed for Carpeting Stairs

Get the best quality underlay that you can as this will make a huge amount of difference to how comfortable everything is under foot. Despite the above risks, on the whole if you are not going for the natural wood look or the timber used to construct your stairs isn’t particularly eye catching then it’s a great idea to carpet them as the advantages far out-weigh the downsides. Methods for Installing Carpet

If the stairs curve, it is worth remembering that tufted carpets tend to be stiff which makes them difficult to lay on stairs that curve. So if possible always use woven carpet. For full information on everyting you need to know about carpet underlay including how to lay carpet underlay see our project here. Step 6 – Roll out the Carpet

Carpet Underlay

You should be concentrating on a length of about 600mm from the corner of the room at the moment. Turn the blade round and cut the 600mm along the crease until you have reached the corner. Children: Again, adding carpet will help with noise reduction and also it will make otherwise hard surfaces much softer for landings during any slips or falls
