I do not normally read murder mystery novels, but since it was based in the Tudor dynasty, I decided to give it a shot and I wholeheartedly loved it. The Goldsboro exclusive edition of "Empire of the Damned" by Jay Kristoff will feature block sprayed. The inhabitants in the north, mostly still Papists, were less than pleased with the king, the destruction of their monasteries, the outlawing o

The characters are totally convincing, the plot is exciting and will have you sat on the edge of your seat towards the end and there's a depth and subtlety to the plot which isn't often encountered in historical fiction. By insisting God intended her to be married to the King until death, she brought about the very revolution to religion she hated and feared. The dastardly Richard Rich, who I have always felt was a bit shady, but Sansom made me hate him even more. Have you ever read a historical fiction series that made you stop and think that the plots of the books could be possible? I know modern York well and quite a bit about its history, but the story really brings the sixteenth century city to life. Shardlake finds himself joining the King’s progress to the North where not only will he be assisting with the legal work of processing the petitions to the King, he will also be ensuring the welfare of an important prisoner who needs to be interrogated in London. Yes, bones hanging from a loft where a man had died slowly, in chains, and finally been picked clean, while various body parts of other miscreants (or just someone who was out of favour at the wrong time) decorate bridges and pikes and fences everywhere.

Regardless, this is a superior series and the writing and plotting are top drawer and will make you see 16th century England when you close your eyes. Shardlake works on commission initially from Thomas Cromwell in Dissolution and Dark Fire and then Thomas Cranmer in Sovereign and Revelation. With Barak busy being in love, under pressure from Maleverer and Rich, with several attempts on his life and humiliated by King Henry himself, this really makes you face the reality of the Tudor world. When Tam Crawford is unexpectedly bequeathed some money, he can finally realise his dream of settling down in the beautiful village of Ellindale.

It could be argued that the books get too long and could do with an edit, and I’d usually be arguing that myself, but I love the way Sansom shows us all sorts of stuff along the way that may not move the plot along, but builds up a full and fascinating picture of the time. Since all of these novels revolve around murder mysteries, I think it is only right that we should discuss the murders themselves. Sansom has a wonderful way of weaving his characters into a glorious tapestry and will not disappoint.
