You can almost feel the giddiness of Mommy on the merry-go-round or the whoosh of Mama and the child as they shoot down the slide. The illustrator Carol Thompson did a fantastic job of depicting the background with bright and beautiful drawings that followed the words down the period. The book gives children a new insight into lesbian families without using any biases or chapter oversimplification.

The mothers play with their son in relate able activities like, going to the park, bath time and bedtime. Yet parents who start reading to their kids early find that their children are better readers later on down the road. Each mother does their own special things with baby during the day from flying up in the air to cooking in the kitchen. The writing is pretty straightforward—no frills and complexities and ‘coming-out’ problems and all that jazz. The problem is that there really isn't a lot to pick and choose from if you're a modern gay or lesbian couple.LESLEA NEWMAN is the author of over fifty books, including Heather Has Two Mommies, the first children's book to portray lesbian families in a positive way. I especially appreciate the fact that it's a board book, and therefore meant for the very young child, as I cannot think of any other early childhood books in a similar vein. At a time where gay rights and same sex couples are the topic of conversation I think this book is a good thing to read so all kids will know there is nothing wrong with a family being different and that doesn’t make it any less a family.

In fact, the gentle rhythm of the words and unfolding of routine would make this an excellent bedtime book – and, handily, it all ends up on a goodnight kiss. The illustrations and the language used in reading the book are substantive without being inaccessible to younger children.Mommy, Mama, and Me depicts the gentle, nurturing relationship of a lesbian couple and their little one. What a treat: a warm and adorably illustrated board book about a loving family which just happens to have two mums in it. No matter what this family does, however, they do it together until at the end of the day, "Now I'm tucked in nice and tight.

It's a great world building book for a kid whether your kid has two mommies or you are a single parent or whatever else. My absolute favorite thing about this book and the follow-up story, Daddy, Papa, and Me, is that at no point is there an effort to say "this is what it's like to have same-gender parents. The book, by Leslea Newman, uses simple language to tell the story of a young child and her two loving and nurturing mommies in a loving way that all children should be able to relate to. In the majority of the photos, there is no background color, this helps keep the reader's attention focused on the characters in the story. There is also a rhythmic pattern throughout the story, as the last word of the first page rhymes with the last word of the second page.

The book does not draw as much attention to the fact that the child's parents are a lesbian couple as it does to the fact that they love their child and are doing an excellent job as a normal parents who are doing everything in their power to care for their baby. Featuring a vibrant rainbow design, and our super-sized Q logo, you won't find a more stylish way to make a statement. As a children's librarian I do occasionally have to deal with parents who look at the books I recommend to them and then say, "Do you have anything less .Lovely book and beautifully illustrated but slightly better if your family is like that in the book ie with two mums. I would emphasize are the great things the moms are doing and try to relate to things that their parents do for them. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This book follows a lot of repetitions and it is very predictable, which makes it a great bedtime book for young readers still learning how to comprehend. I've been pushing the boat out a little bit in playgroup lately by including books that are explicitly about diverse topics (vs.
