Between these, I would have liked to have seen more smaller illustrations, as there are times when it seems that you turn quite a few pages before you come across the next one.

The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. Hocus Pocus book is just stunning and colourful illustration style mixed of goth Edward Gorey, Tim Burton and characters in expressionism in both dark and light world.

I made a point of reading a little bit of this every night before bed, laying it on top of my cozy orange blanket. Apparently the movie is now a cult classic (I have never seen it) starring Bette Midler as the evil head witch Winnifred Sanderson.

When Allison opens the spell book, and looks at the names of the owners, she sees that there is an Elizabeth Sanderson listed after the names Winnifred, Mary and Sarah. When he has an opportunity to impress his gorgeous classmate Allison by visiting an old house where a trio of alleged witches once lived, Max jumps at the chance to prove he doesn't believe in the town's superstitions. This personally put me in the ultimate Halloween spirit and I loved carving out this bit of time at the end of each day. In an attempt to impress Allison, Max talks about visiting the creepy museum that has been made from the old cottage that used to belong to the Sanderson witches.Max, Dani and Allison (and the black cat, which of course turns out to be the immortal Thackery Bix) escape from the cottage when Max cleverly uses his lighter to set off the sprinkler system. He lights the Black Flame Candle, accidentally releasing a coven of malicious witches, the infamous Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I was still drawn into the story because of the great writing and word choice.

Como fanática enfermita de la primera película, recuerdo los dialogos y expresiones a la perfección, así que no noté variaciones entre el texto y la película. It’s essentially the screenplay but with the stage directions and other notes switched for descriptions. Max Dennison has moved from LA to Salem, and he just doesn’t believe in the parts of Salem’s history that revolves around witches. I literally squealed with delight when I saw this had been made into a book illustrated by Gris Grimly.

Is she perhaps the girl mentioned in the prologue that Emily Binx talks to before she runs off and the girl tries to warm her? One can tell that Grimly was inspired by the appearances of the actors who originally portrayed the characters, but he made sure to put his own twist upon them to give them a whole new look. Only Gris Grimly's name appears on the cover, but the inside pages reveal that Hocus Pocus is written by someone named A. In general, the book seemed to give Allison a tiny bit more of a part, as a STEM student that Max had admired for awhile before Halloween. Also, there are some weird lines about Allison and Max that are pretty cheesy and unnecessary, such as the line about him feeling able to conquer the world with her beside him. Maybe I’m misremembering how active he was onscreen, but I reached the end of the book and thought, What the heck was Binx doing this whole time? I recently saw the book in a local Target and decided to give it a go because of my memories watching the movie with my daughter. I think most of that judgement came from the sequel and after watching the movie sequel, I think my judgment is a little less harsh.
