The "rules" are the root of the perpetual cycle of violence that is the cause of so many senseless killings.

Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. Jason Reynolds is an American author of novels and poetry for young adult and middle-grade audience. An IMPORTANT book that will let children know this is not true as far as Jason Reynolds is concerned . I had trouble visualizing the setting for some reason, the writing style in verse lacked something for me.Since they don't have a father figure, Will looks to Shawn for approval and to learn about the world in which they live. When Shawn, the beloved big brother of 15-year-old Will, is shot dead, Will is ready to follow "the rules" and get revenge. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything.

He’s succeeded in his aim by a million degrees: this is one of the most exciting books written for young people or anyone. You can find this review and more on my blog, or you can follow me on twitter, bookstagram, or facebook! Next onto the elevator is the man Will has been waiting for since he was three years old: Mikey Holloman, Will's father. Will is determined to honor the memory of his brother and thus feels compelled to seek revenge for Shawn's death by killing his murderer, but at the same time, he is nervous and uncertain about the gravity of his future actions.Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today. Ellen Hopkins’ use of verse and poetry is dead and Jason Reynolds killed it, personally, by himself. By doing so, the reader can only wonder how the lives of these loved ones might have been different if they had had this wisdom bestowed upon them while they were alive.

i've read several books written in verse now and this one was superior to all the ones i've read before. I’ve always loved stories written in verse, so when I heard about this own-voice tale of the struggles that toxic masculinity and systemic racism place upon young black men, I was immediately interested. The rules that have been set by his family and community, because validation lies there and it’s the only way a situation has ever been handled. it feels like God be flashing photos of his children, awkward, amazing, tucked in his wallet for the world to see. The overall theme of the book is one of revenge, passed down through generations and strengthened through the community they live in.The weight of dehumanization, of being stripped of personhood because of instinctual moments and feelings, unfettered. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. The "an eye for an eye" mentality only serves to perpetuate a cycle of violence in which nothing ever really changes or gets better until someone is brave enough to break the cycle. I can picture the faces in my head of the former students I wish were still in my classroom so I could put this book right into their hands. On suit notre protagoniste, dans sa tête, qui souhaite venger la mort de son frère, tué par balle dans contexte de règlement de compte entre gangs de rue.

He also reveals that when he was in a similar situation years ago and tried to take revenge, he killed the wrong person, but still furthered the cycle of violence. Or did he heed the cautions from his elevator visitors, sensing the regret, and observing the endless path of destruction torn by bullet after bullet through the ranks of his family and friends? Jason Reynolds is an author I discovered last year and I have yet to pick up a book by him I haven't loved.

At the center of the novel are the unwritten "rules" that act as a code of ethics and lay out the expected norms in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the rules have been passed down from generation to generation, creating a deeply ingrained pattern of violence that seems impossible to escape. Jason Reynolds is a New York Times bestselling author, a Newbery Award Honoree, a Printz Award Honoree, National Book Award Honoree, a Kirkus Award winner, a two time Walter Dean Myers Award winner, an NAACP Image Award Winner, and the recipient of multiple Coretta Scott King honors. But as he takes the elevator down, with a gun tucked in his pants, it stops on each floor and a ghost from Will's past enters, all victims of gun violence, but will that be enough to change his mind ?
