Description

Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. But with time on his hands and money behind him, Ryan starts to think the movie business could be his next career move. You’d think he’d keep a low profile, but instead he makes a series of blunders such as investing in a particular movie and boffing a famous actress. The problem for Danny is that there are eyes everywhere and laying low is not quite as easy as it should be. Winslow creates characters with so much depth and feeling, you can't help but to care for them, especially with Danny.

Thankfully I consumed this in audiobook form (beautifully read by Ari Fliakos, who also read the first in the series) or I am sure I would not have cleaned or done laundry or walked anywhere during that time. But the limelight is never a good thing when you come from a life of crime, so eventually he has to leave. Rhode Island ha dejado de ser seguro y menos aún para criar a un niño teniendo a la mafia italiana tan cerca. If I had been reading this, I would have been highlighting phrases for the sheer poetry combined with spot on accuracy.

I fell in love with Don Winslow's books last year and adored the first book in this series, CITY ON FIRE. Much contemporary crime fiction works on a small scale: a focus on interior lives, claustrophobic domestic settings, the evil that you didn’t know existed next door, in the next room, next to you in bed.

City of Dreams can be read as a standalone--enough backstory is given to understand the situations the characters face--but I recommend reading City on Fire first, just because it's an excellent read.If you read the first book you know that Danny is broke, in the middle of a hailstorm of grief, and in a lot of trouble at the end of the last book. Look to the best mysteries to solve as you lounge by the pool, take a refreshing swim through some historical fiction, or slip off to the cabana with one of our five favorite escapist reads.

While we’re treated to a few short bouts of the violence you’d expect after reading the first book in the trilogy, the majority of the book deals with the Irish fugitives' ideas of laying low. Every month, Book World’s editors and critics share their favorite books that they’ve read recently. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. This is a well written, gripping and compulsive read from Winslow, with its high body count, a story of tragedy, family, loss, grief, love, and Hollywood. The love story is potent but watching these New England hoods try to navigate the Hollywood world is pure gold! We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. This is the second in the epic and ambitious trilogy by Don Winslow, drawing on Virgil's Aeneid, which sees Danny Ryan, making his way to warm and sunny California, a long held dream of his, after Peter Moretti wins the Rhode Island war.
