She is not a movie star, exactly; although her Uncut Gems role was a breakout, she has appeared in only a few productions since.

So when I see someone heartbroken and hysterical I almost want to be like, 'You're so lucky, shut up. But by the time I had finished this book, I was struggling to find a word short of “masterpiece” to describe it myself. The good-survivor archetype has forgotten much of what she knows and feels in exchange for credibility, and yet she isn’t taken entirely seriously, either, except by other strong women. She seemed to be playing the internet like a fiddle, knowing exactly what the paparazzi wanted, and what would go viral. She dares to be honest without yielding to the tremendous pressure to confess to the abuse she has endured from a vantage point of crystalline respectability….

She found herself addicted to the rush of stealing, but got busted after an outing at Bloomingdale's. Now, with her new memoir, Down the Drain, Fox makes a case for herself as one of her generation’s most authentic storytellers, cutting through niche fame and viral moments with a clarion voice and a worldly-wise sensibility honed from the thrills and near-death experiences she’s witnessed during her 33 years of life. For me, the most harrowing and heartbreaking part of the novel was the descriptions of the various abusive relationships Fox has experienced. But beyond the conference room’s doors, this kind of survivorhood is viewed as a special-interest group at best — a knitting club for the formerly unwell.

Fox has also taken to Instagram to unveil to front and back covers, captioning the post: “DOWN THE DRAIN IS FINALLY HERE! He had a lot of control over me, I became very isolated when I was in hiding and the thought of leaving him wasn't even an option. It has been said that trauma is over, but perhaps what is over is simply trauma as a dull morality play starring the rah-rah survivor girl with the highest goal of rejoining the world by wiping her hard drive clean. She has been profiled in some of the biggest publications, from New York Magazine to the New York Times.

We acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on this land and commit to building a brighter future together. In her book, Fox refuses to play the good survivor’s game of switching off entire parts of herself, like the parts that might still be attracted to an abusive ex or that crave a drug to relieve pain. She inspired the character in her break out role in the Safdie Brothers' Uncut Gems and has acted in numerous films since. I believed her when she first said she planned to get clean and healthy, and I was therefore devastated in her moments of relapse. It won't be everyone's taste but I absolutely ate this up, I think Fox has an incredible talent and I hope she has longevity as an artist whose project is her whole life.

This isn’t the type of celebrity memoir filled with frivolous name-drops and flimsy anecdotes; it’s a revealing and often harrowing journey through the life of a person who has been reviled, adored and victimized — and also just happens to be recognizable. One high-school boyfriend is an adolescent mercenary named Ace — recruited by rich kids to beat up other rich kids — who also deals PCP and heroin.
