Kate’s death has cemented the distrust between her husband, Johnny, and daughter Marah, who expresses her grief by cutting herself and dropping out of college to hang out with goth poet Paxton. A tragedy will bring these three women together and set them on a poignant, powerful journey of redemption.

You'd think it would be easy to step back into a world you'd created, but it was surprisingly difficult to find my way back to this story and these characters. The only likable character was Dorothy and her story was just thrown in so late…the other main characters were annoying! This one is more about Marah and Tully and we get to learn all about Tully's mom Cloud, now going by Dorothy again. Still love the way the story spans over 40 years and how we got to see all the events from different point of views. It was well written, so even though we couldn’t identify with it personally, we were able to see it from the perspective of someone doing it.

As always, a poignant read from Kristen Hannah where you read with occasional lumps in your throat, tissues at the ready and an emotional mess at the end although a happy sad feeling. She was floating 3-4 people in her apartment, the only one working, and was so low that she didn’t know how she was going to eat and she gets this bright idea to sell the story. The way Kristen Hannah executed the conversations between Kate and Tully was nothing short of beautiful. There was a lot of repetition as we listened to each ones story of the same events, at least I think they were relating the same events. This makes me think about Marah selling the story and how that wasn’t the first time she had sold someone out. In spite of not really liking many of the characters, I still loved this book, and I think it’s because it just felt so real. She got slowly to her feet and left the bathroom, pushing her way through the theater’s crowded lobby, ignoring the judgmental looks cast her way by the beautiful people drinking champagne beneath a glittering nineteenth century chandelier.

I was curious about Cloud, Tully's crazy mother, and was interested in her sub-plot, but ultimately, I wanted to know what was going to happen to Marah. Now Kate has died of cancer, and Tully, whose once-stellar TV talk show career is in free fall, is wracked with guilt over her failure to be there for Kate until her very last days. I read the first book Firefly Lane after watching the Netflix series of the same name, and purchased this sequel straight away as I wanted to know what happened next. For those who don’t know, the second novel continues follows Kate, Tully, Johnny and Marah, despite one of the four passing away—don’t say we didn’t warn you that there’d be spoilers. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Hannah’s sequel to Firefly Lane (2008) demonstrates that those who ignore family history are often condemned to repeat it. So, I think back to my late teen years and I remember the dumb decisions I made, like hanging out with people I didn’t know that well. I encourage readers to peruse FIREFLY LANE before beginning this book, although FLY AWAY is also a stand alone novel.
