Description

This book is about the many observations and discoveries and intimate views of animal behavior to challenge the boundaries between humans and non-human animals. It is essential reading for all who want to expand their understanding of cognition, culture and life on Earth. Parents-to-be will find the stories helpful so they can think about what happens during pregnancy and childbirth. If you believe in evolution, you'll know that nothing just springs out of no where, nature and biology build on itself. CEO, Alicia Wood, has re-articulated what Beyond Words stands for, defining our strengths in supporting both visual and emotional literacy and exploring a wider readership for our stories, with our main focus being book clubs or groups whether in community, educational or therapeutic settings.

Safina is the inaugural holder of the endowed chair for nature and humanity at Stony Brook University, where he co-chairs the steering committee of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and is founding president of the not-for-profit organization, The Safina Center. Baroness Hollins is Chair of the Board of Trustees and editorial content is still overseen by her, together with a wider team of expert authors, artists and readers who find pictures easier than words. By telling the whole story in pictures, they help people to prepare for an event or re-visit something that has happened, such as going to hospital.Animals are directly affected by human pressures, and in encountering (and listening) to the minds of other animals Carl Safina hears what animals need humans to know about our shared life. I bought it as a gift for someone else, but after reading the first few pages I got them a box of chocolates and kept it for myself. Weaving together up-to-date scientific discoveries into consciousness with intimate observation of free-living animals, from herds of elephant in Kenya to a wolf pack in Yellowstone National Park and schools of killer whales in the Pacific, Carl Safina takes the reader into their lives and minds. And touch is a persistent and universal mode of sharing emotions and social cohesion among the three species (as well as dolphins and primates). Result: the biggest baby boom in Cynthia's forty-year history here, about 250 little elephants born in the last two years.

In 2022, Nigel was awarded a Learning Disability National Leadership Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from Beyond Words. Segmented like the tree trunks of the palms under which they sometimes rest, the trunk is an elephant's Swiss Army knife. At once moving and surprising, Beyond Words asks us to reexamine our relationship to other species-and to ourselves. One can never know what their true feelings are like since they can’t speak, but close analogy to the human forms is a simpler, even scientific, supposition compared to the alternative that they emerged in exalted form in humans and limited forms only in our “higher” primate cousins.

Beyond Words is a year-long project that celebrates artists’ books through creating and exhibiting new work and providing a book making and learning programme. This first Beyond Words book club was co-facilitated by Nigel and his wonderful support worker, Sonya, and then Sue Carmichael began to develop book clubs throughout Kent and to train people in other areas who wanted to learn from her experience. The pictures show how she talks to her supporter and is helped by her to establish some friendships.Sue remains in Kent to this day, developing and maintaining a large network of Beyond Words book clubs. All of our books tell a story, but because there are no words, they also let the reader tell their own story – whatever it is that they see in the pictures. Rounded on the outer edge, flattened on the inner, a great mine-sweeping, water-hosing, mud-flinging, dust-deviling, air-testing, food-gathering, friend-greeting, infant-rescuing, baby-reassuring caterpillar of a nose.
