La intriga también está bien articulada de manera que no sabes por donde van a salir los tiros, cosa que se agradece. Before turning to writing full-time, Michael worked as a private investigator and as a newspaper reporter, and taught at the Indiana University School of Journalism. It vividly evokes Berlin in 1989 and perfectly captures the atmosphere and mood of what was then a tragic city.

Ben Fergusson's "An Honest Man" reminds us that love can cause us to see with rose-colored glasses but it can also give us clarity to help us see what had been in front of us the whole time.Certainly there is more to this thriving city which is dynamic and fascinating in many ways but walking through the streets there are evident battle scars around every corner. Since then, I had read How it Happened, mildly liked it, and then I could barely get into Those Who Wish Me Dead as it had all the feel of a run of the mill thriller. An Honest Man,” is set in Berlin, during the summer of 1989, when friends Ralf, Stefan, Maike and Petra, spend the time hanging out and their involvement in conservation and nature; passing the time before they receive their exam results and move on to university. In Ben Fergusson's An Honest Man our narrator Ralf revisits a particularly significant year in his life.

The historical perspective is handled really well, and you truly get a sense of the teenagers in the story and their lives. Another point I want to make is that, as a lifelong reader and lover of great books, I really loved how Michael Koryta uncovered his shout-out to author Gary Paulsen and his classic novel HATCHET with the nickname Lyman utilized for his unexpected guest. So if you want to read a historical mystery set in the mid twentieth century with a very interesting and detailed legal basis than this is the one to get. He doesn't seem to be at all freighted with the self-loathing and dread that many of us experienced. And the novel has a tragic depth that leaves the reader disturbed and in shock as psychological walls dissolve and the truth slowly unwinds. The young are driven by a innate sense of honesty, the desire to see right and wrong as absolutes but the adult world in grey, nuanced, complex. We do have a lot of cliches mixed in with the action that takes in down to 3 stars but overall it is a great read. We followed a drift of Berliners up Potsdammer Strasse to the Kulturforum, passed dazed-looking prostitutes in high heels and leather jackets watching the exodus with folded arms. I found myself so invested and cheering on the good guys and wanting to take down each bad guy and not missing a single word because I was looking for clues and trying to figure it all out myself.
