Description

The author makes two powerful points at the end: if we don't use our navigational skills and stop paying attention solely to GPS, we will lose that skill; and we are affecting the habitats and navigational abilities of many species due to our behavior towards the earth. It is a hymn to the almost vanished art of fixing your position by the light of the sun and stars - with the aid of a sextant - an art on which mariners relied until only a generation ago. The bulk of the book is divided over 25 short, very readable chapters in two parts: non-map and map-based navigation, with a short third concluding part containing the last two chapters. From the bucket-list sights, such as the Golden Pavillion, to unique experiences, including a geisha (Geiko) performance in Kyoto and meeting with a cherry blossom doctor, this tour promises to dazzle.

This actually did not really bother me here, because David Barrie really tried to explain in detail what is needed for navigation and how exactly animals use these tools (in their brain and in the environment) to get somewhere. Since then I've sailed in many parts of the world - from British Columbia to the China Sea, and from the Hebrides to the Caribbean. Thought I understood how ants find their way around, but was further off than a human lost in the woods.

All in all, though, I found Supernavigators to be a fun and highly readable overview of the many ways animals (including humans) navigate.

And insects, such as the Australian Bogong moth or the silver ‘Y’ moth in Europe can migrate thousands of kilometres. The Incredible Journey is a 1963 adventure film directed by Fletcher Markle and produced by Walt Disney Productions. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. Barrie mentions well-known examples, such as bees and their famous waggle dance (heavily borrowing from The Dancing Bees: Karl Von Frisch and the Discovery of the Honeybee Language), the ability of many insects to observe polarised light (we here meet the specialised area in insect eyes that Land also described in Eyes to See: The Astonishing Variety of Vision in Nature), or the migrations of the monarch butterfly (see also Chasing Monarchs: Migrating With the Butterflies of Passage). but the often painstaking detective work undertaken by the scientists seeking to discover how they operate. Choć może lepiej zostawmy je prawowitym właścicielom, bo jak znam życie człowiek z najpiękniejszego daru potrafi zrobić świństwo. Unlike the original story, the wilderness through which the three animals journey across is in the Sierra Nevada mountains, not the forested wilderness of Ontario.

Only a sailor could relate the navigational powers of both humans and animals with such appreciation, excitement, and precision. I was struck by the devastation of colonization on their cultures and how it negatively affected their survival and coping skills. Having no means of getting food from humans without getting caught, they continue to forge ahead, but Bodger eventually collapses. The narrator has a fantastic voice and I was fascinated by the information in this book but it is not one to read on a long car ride. Come, step into the places where Jesus’ compassion prompted his mighty acts of healing and deliverance.

Thank you, David Barrie, for taking us along on these riveting voyages by sail and wing, hoof and flipper. A very accessible and enlightening exploration of how bees, ants, beetles, butterflies, fish, birds, and humans navigate their way around the world. I think the book would have been more thoughtfully organized in a different way with the main topics related to polarization, magnetism, internal compass, light/dark, etc. The chapter dealing with the effects of the built environment on other creatures, as well as the use of our new navigation technology is especially interesting.
