Description

I read this in the space of a day - chapter one presents a completely gob smacking twist, and I was hooked from this point onwards. Told in dual timelines, from Joanna’s perspective and travelling back to the 1980s when Lily went missing, the suspense builds and it is hard to know who to trust as the reader is kept guessing and the revelations keep coming.

Thanks to author, Andrea Mara, publishers Random House UK and Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. You won’t be at all disappointed and just want to read more and more from this wildly talented author. It is so cleverly plotted with many characters whose lives overlap, though its written so well its easy to keep up.The opening section of Hide and Seek immediately grabs hold of you, slaps you in the face and leaves you cast aside agonising over what's to come.

The memories of some either contradict or support the recollections of others and its interesting to see the changing of attitudes, or lack thereof, over the 30 years that have gone by.

This was a domestic thriller that wasn’t slow but wasn’t fast paced either, I enjoyed the multiple timelines and thought they worked really well. I found myself on the edge of my seat with Joanna’s anxiety and her fear about being responsible for Lily’s death. Joanna is determined to get to the bottom of the little girl's disappearance but as she begins to snoop, it becomes apparent that she has some pretty dark secrets of her own.

It moves back and forth between the 80s and present day effortlessly, and the authentic depiction of the characters and their conversations made for such an engaging experience. For those who haven't yet read this (I felt like I was one of the last 😅) the story follows Joanna and her family's move into their new home in an affluent Dublin suburb. With dual timelines, perspectives, and a LOT of characters, you will have to give your full attention to this book. Even though there is a smattering of males, the perspectives are all from female points-of-view, which makes sense in the context of traditional roles in the communities being portrayed. Having read countless domestic suspense novels about a child gone missing, I found this one to be refreshingly different and a cut above the rest. Many thanks to Netgalley and Random House UK, Transworld Publishers for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly. Andrea Mara is a Sunday Times and Irish Times top ten bestselling author, and has been shortlisted for a number of awards, including Irish Crime Novel of the Year.
