The game features a novel blend of interwoven systems and mechanisms, such as multi-use cards, area influence, tile placement, and set collection. So it becomes this idea where you don’t want to put powerful cards in there, but you weren’t going to see it that often anyways. The game is actually pretty simple and even though its daunting to look at, once you get into it you’ll find the systems pretty intuitive. I have not played any of the expansion materials that shipped with the game, so I cannot speak for what they might offer, but my primary criticism of the game is that for a game about surviving in a deadly winter expanse, you can’t really make much in the way of mistakes, save one: failing to chain actions.

The premise of EW is that you’re managing a tribe of cave people (I’m no scientist, but this game has no pretensions towards any kind of historical or scientific fidelity), and you wanna grow that tribe, build camps, and probably lay down some big flat megalith stones. Each round, players send their tribe members to various action spaces, and pay for the actions by playing cards and spending resources. The first part can be performed any number of times, the second part only once, and only the first player to choose the action carries out the third part. But as a game where you fight tooth and nail to survive in a hostile world against other players, it doesn’t really deliver on some of its aesthetic promises.
