Dani has started to withdraw a bit from her peers, a fact her loving parents definitely recognize, yet they've been unable to get Dani to open up to them about what's going on. Just when I say I don't enjoy contemporary young adult books anymore, the reader-verse proves me so wrong. it’s not even super sad, especially when compared to other books i’ve read, but their story was so sweet and i fell in love with both of them🥹 i fell in love with the story and the writing, too, and i did not want to put this book down!

Meanwhile, Prince is dealing with providing for his family, especially since he has to take care of his mother, who has MS.After all, at seventeen, he has his own segment on Detroit’s popular hip-hop show, Love Radio, where he dishes out advice to the brokenhearted.

He's actually been noticing her for a while, but has never had the courage to speak to her, but how can he give out serious love advice if he can't even follow it himself. There’s growth and trust and stumbling and resets scattered all throughout the development of these two characters (both as individuals and as partners for one another). That doesn't mean there isn't challenge, lots of obstacles to choosing not to change or grow, or take risks for love, or otherwise there would be no story, and no reflection of the music and movies that are so deeply interwoven in the text. The characters at the heart of this novel are so completely lovable, that you root not only for them individually, but for them as a couple.

Prince is the primary caretaker for his mother, a strong woman fighting MS, and his younger brother.and Prince was literally so wholesome and sweet, i loved him 🥹💗 Their relationship was also really cute and i enjoyed seeing the progression of it. They both had goals, and in spite of outside influences, they both were steadily working towards achieving the things they wanted. Prince is passionate about music and romance and gives relationship advice on his Love Radio show- however, his own love life is looking a bit sad. Dani and Prince are both alike and different, complimenting each other and challenging on another in unique and unexpected ways. As she let her guard down, she was able to open her heart to feelings she never thought were possible.

This fun YA novel of relationships and belonging to one's self has great characters, a delightful soundtrack (yes, I'm anticipating playlists across music apps to reflect what's in the book), and a playful engagement with Black romantic films. When Prince and Dani meet, sparks fly but Dani doesn't want to get distracted- so she gives Prince only three dates to convince her he's worth falling for. I love seeing actual people on the cover, especially when so often books featuring Black characters don’t feature them on the cover. She’s also struggling to explain to her parents why she hasn’t been hanging out with her friends because that would mean talking about the assault. A story about a Black girl who loves reading from Black authors letting go and experiencing her own love story like in the movies. Seeing Danielle with her girlfriends and Prince with his boys also provided insight into the accountability friends can offer.
