I really loved how this story touched on the power dynamics between a very wealthy hero and a dirt-poor heroine. While Ryan struggles with bonding with his teammates and Zoey is given the opportunity to get back on her feet, a very sweet slow-burn romance blossoms between the two. There was a lot of petty drama being added in and I honestly didn’t care for anything that was going on. He offers to drop her off where she’s going when she freaks out that she’s missed her bus and he takes her and figures out that it’s a homeless shelter and because they were late she’ll be on the streets that night so he offers his couch. Now living in Ryan’s apartment with no obligations other than working on getting back on her feet, Zoey’s confusion with the kindness he shows her eventually morphs into trust, and though she tries to fight it, she slowly makes a place for herself in his life and likes the person she’s become at his side.

This is the second in a series of standalones and while the beginning was a bit slow and lacked chemistry, the rest of the book picks up and eventually comes to a satisfying ending. along with some clunky, juvenile dialogue made me start to think of these two twenty somethings as that obnoxious middle school couple who always has their hands in each other’s sleeves. She came from a place of love and kindness for her son but also a ton of understanding and empathy for Zoe as a woman and as a human being who had been through so much. Oddly, it was followed by a 'bonus' chapter or second epilogue, which I just plain disliked, because it was almost like reading porn. Ryan and Zoey’s meet was adorable and they connected from the first instance and watching them grow not only together but on their own growing and learning it was honestly beautiful!

When the MCs finally got together, their devoted relationship was lovely to read, and the spice that followed was good.
