The settings are beautifully described by the author, visualisation taking its place in your head even to speeding down winding steep narrow roads, and that feeling of the need to hold on tight and close your eyes as your heart rate rises rapidly to the sound of screeching tyres.

Because his latest work is set in a shooting lodge in Yorkshire, his agent (and former lover) has set up a “shooting” (clay pigeons) weekend in the area. Harry is now investigating serial killings in his posting, a rural area exaggeratedly nicknamed “Town”. I happen to be going to the Yorkshire Dales in September, and I came across this series on Kindle Unlimited while browsing for a UK Police Procedural to read. I like this because it’s nice to be reminded of old stories and it gives this book the same sort of feeling of a tale you might know already. It had been filmed around Wensleydale and over in nearby Swaledale, and this is where Harry was now headed. In the great tradition of English small-town copper stories, though, the troubles of the big city follow him. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in crime, interesting characters and North Yorkshire. I liked the setting, I fell into the little quaint village immediately and pictured some of the scenes vividly.

But the author’s insistence on bringing God (or spirituality) into the books by way of a lesbian vicar just doesn’t work for me. The nearby town of Askrig is the home of an internationally famous pop singer, Gareth Jones, who recorded “that Christmas song – you remember. I was intrigued immediately as I read the first page and was so happy I had the three books together. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. It doesn’t help that he’s still looking for his father; 20 years before, the man violently abused Grimm’s younger brother and killed his mother. A great introduction to Harry Grimm who is a man with a history and a dark one at that, but who I found a likeable bloke even with his flaws. The fusion of the country and city with the is seamlessly executed, crafting a world that feels like it is going to be fun to explore.

When Inspector Grimm comes to investigate with his team, they are quickly convinced that what looks like an accident is murder. crime/mystery (1) 2-reader (1) aubrey parsons (1) audible-wl (1) bab (2) British crime fiction (2) crime (4) crime fiction (2) currently-reading (2) David J. Once the action moves to Wensleydale, there is a bit of a lull before the pace picks up, and then there are several twists the last 10%.Library, post office, even the petrol station up the other end of town, just beyond the primary school.

DCI Harry Grimm is the classic tough city cop sent to the country to chill, but trouble doesn't have to follow him, it's already there waiting. It’s all part of a large, organized conspiracy run by greedy and cruel people, something no one had looked for out here in the country. The former special forces officer is heading to Europe, to go face to face with some of Putin's most killer henchmen!

But the next morning, the female vicar finds a body hanging from a bell rope in the tower, surrounded by Satanic graffiti on the walls. Maybe my perception has been altered by my religious intolerance, but I wasn’t entirely happy with this one. I loved this book and especially the descriptions of the Yorkshire countryside, the quirky characters and the contrasts that Harry experiences to his previous role. This contemporary mystery story is realistic and a little gritty while still having some dry British humor, a fish out of water detective, a vivid cast of supporting police characters, and a nail-biting mystery.
