It rather shocks me how many malignant reviews people give this album compared to the duo's three previous CD's before. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. A curious title, possibly hinting that just as the seventh tidal wave offers a stronger current, the seventh tree will signify a similar break from normality.A special edition of Seventh Tree was released on 3 November 2008, featuring new album artwork, photographs and a DVD. silent under the needle in the interims, and the music is all where it should be in terms of detail and power.

The look of the glamorous disco diva that appeared on Black Cherry and Supernature is replaced by a more natural but slightly less confident appearance. Quite what the lyrics are driving at remains a mystery - they could just be a load of old bollerghs - but notice of a musical volte-face is duly served. Even if Seventh Tree is sonic dishwater, I'll give Goldfrapp enough credit to assume that this isn't change for its own sake, that the motivation for this album's tone wasn't simply a fatigued boredom with their old sound.

It can be upsetting to longtime fans, but often times the only real hurdle to these new directions is unfamiliarity-- just look at Goldfrapp, who startled their earliest fans by shifting from the surrealistic elegance of their 2000 orchestral-pop debut Felt Mountain to a beat-heavy mid-decade run at the dance charts.

As our old chum John Thomas might have told us, an artist given to the sudden musical volte-face is impossible to predict. Wonderful sounds and arrangements abound, and I have to say this album really highlights Alison's vocal prowess and versatility (has anyone else noted that hint of Norah Jones), never more impressive than on Road To Somewhere. It would put me in the mood of what nature setting I reside in and make life around me more magical.
