About this deal

In the teens and closer to the 20 degrees, I was almost too warm at times, and would flip open the convertible mittens inside the Bar Mitts and use my bare hands directly, although bare hands were a tad too cool at that temperature.

Lastyear I used thick 3m weather tech snow gloves but even at 10F I'd generate enough heat to get them wet, then the finger tips would freeze and I'd be sol. I definitely consider the Bar Mitts Mountain Extreme to be the biggest contribution to curing the common problem of cold hands. We've simply republished information exactly as we got it from our supplier without curating or improving it. They are easy to get in and out of, so it was easy enough to take my hands out grab some water or a snack, or just to signal in traffic.

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Wanting to ride on the very top of my hoods in an out-of-the-saddle position proved a bit challenging however.I'm not sure why cyclists ever thought that using something that doesn't breath at all was a good idea or an athletic sport. After getting caught out by a low snow line on a recent gravel ride —and crying in my car afterwards as the fingers painfully came back to life—, I turned to Bar Mitts to see how these compared to the best winter cycling gloves. As she competed at the elite level, her journalism career followed, and soon she became a full-time cycling journalist.

I'm talking wearing windstopper balaclava, moto/ski goggles, wool base, under softshell, and all that.

BAR MITTS: Waterproof Neoprene The BEST System we have found to keep your hands comfortable in the cold or wet weather. The openings of the Bar Mitts don’t extend far enough forward that I can comfortably ride on the top of the hoods. The tested units are meant for flat bars on a Mountain or Commuter bike, and come in one size and color (black).

For my first test ride, I chose a windy day where the temp stayed at a chilly 18 degrees, and my fingers stayed WARM for the entirety of the 2 hour ride with just a thin spring glove on. Unlike most pogies, Bar Mitts do not cinch closed around the wrist, which makes me feel better about potentially disconnecting from my bike on rougher trails. Made of 5mm thick neoprene, the cornucopia-shaped pogies slide over the bar ends, enclosing the brake levers and hoods, and attach to your bars using an integrated velcro strap. Inside the Bar Mitts, there is a small attached neoprene ring, that allows them to be clamped onto the bar ends. As I review the latest options available, I see that both regular and Extreme Bar Mitts now have model options for bar ends (2 holes) or bar end mirrors (1 hole).

Our test mitts had the zipper, but since the bike has internally routed cables, I just kept it zipped up with no issues. Extremities are the first parts of the body to get cold on a mid-winter fat bike ride and the last to warm up. It’s impossible to see the bolt head that you targeting with a wrench through the tiny hole in the neoprene, so I still blindly stick one hand in a mitt to help guide it into the bolt. Bar mitts seem to get very solid reviews, just curious if anyone doesn't like them and prefers some other sort of hand warming solution heading south of 20F to zero and perhaps a bit below?
