Since bioluminescence has proven to be an energy-expensive process, the evolution of bioluminescence in nature must be of some ecological or biological significance, or must offer some evolutionary advantage to the organism. This is certainly true, because there are multiple incidences of the evolution of bioluminescence, all completely independent from each other, and showing a convergent evolution pattern [ 4, 5]. This trait is found in multiple species spanning different phyla. Some even show symbiotic association with microbes. All these species use this phenomenon for a diverse range of applications including evasion of predators, luring prey and even attracting mates [ 6, 7, 8]. In this case, the animation department needed a lot more bones to make it look like Ruby and her family were boneless. “We also wanted to highlight the contrast between Ruby and her family with the humans,” says Puertolas. “So, the humans do have elbows and you can feel the clear articulation. And they have a little more angular and rigid poses. It's a subtle thing that hopefully you feel when you watch the film.” Rawat R, Deheyn DD. Available from: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21159673 We were looking through so many iterations of all the characters, but especially Ruby,” notes Puertolas. “We even modeled and rigged three different versions of Ruby. In the end, I think we made the best decisions to make Ruby such a likeable character. We knew that we didn't want to do a realistic approach to an octopus, but we did extrapolate the animal’s curviness, softness, and bulbousness and applied that to the characters.” Animation director Carlos Fernandez Puertolas, who has been on the team since a year before production on the film even started , confirms that there was an almost incalculable number of Ruby designs that he sorted through before narrowing down her look. On DreamWorks Animation’s new 3DCG film, giving the titular hero soft, octopus-like curves capable of flexible, fluid movement that still looked slightly alien required designs – and rigs - that were bendable in ways never done at the studio; the movie hits theaters today, June 30. Available from: http://www.scirp.org/journal/doi.aspx?DOI=10.4236/ae.2015.31004Dinoflagellates are a group of cosmopolitan protistan organisms [ 29] having an ancient evolutionary history, which form one of the most important groups of phytoplankton in the aquatic ecosystems [ 30]. They are the only photosynthetic organisms that are capable of bioluminescence [ 30], and are the most dominant contributors to the occurrence of this phenomenon in the upper ocean [ 31]. Common phenomena like the “Red Tides” and the bioluminescent bays of Jamaica are because of the dramatic increase in the population of Gonyaulax and other dinoflagellate species. Gonyaulax polyedra is supposedly the most studied dinoflagellate species [ 20]. Other common bioluminescent genera are Ceratium, Protoperidinium, Pyrocystis, Noctiluca, [ 31] and Alexandrianum [ 29]. There have been inaccurate records of bioluminescent dinoflagellate species in the past, because of the presence of both bioluminescent as well as non-bioluminescent strains belonging to the same species. Difference in the ability has been observed even between cells of the same strain [ 31]. Ian Amos, Operations Coordinator at PADI AWARE, said: “Kraken Rum has a rich history of supporting marine life, from the smallest sea critters to the biggest sea-dwellers, so we’re proud to be working together once again to save and protect the ocean. Every single bottle sold will help us continue our vital work of removing ocean debris, as well as training new volunteers to help us make an even bigger splash in 2022.” • The Kraken Rum unveils its second bottle from the ‘Unknown Deep’ limited-edition series, which was discovered by a crew of brave divers following a close encounter with The Beast itself.

Morin JG. Coastal bioluminescence: patterns and functions. Bull. Mar. Sci. University of Miami-Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science; 1983;33(4):787-817 Bioluminescent organisms are found in both terrestrial as well as aquatic habitats. However, the aquatic species are exclusively limited to marine ecosystems, and a freshwater bioluminescent system is yet to be reported [ 10]. I love to think that when people think of Krakens, they'll think of Ruby,” says Ruby Gillman producer Kelly Cooney Cilella, also known for serving as a production supervisor on Shrek The Third, as well as a production manager on Puss in Boots and Trolls. “Finding Ruby’s design specifically as a giant Kraken was probably one of the biggest challenges of the movie because she's a sea monster and yet we wanted her to feel aspirational. We wanted her to feel feminine. We wanted her to be something that a little girl could look at, and go, ‘I want to be that.’ It took some iteration.”Fordyce W.
