Scenes from the fourth instalment of The Goblet of Fire were filmed on the banks on Virginia Water lake. With the latest imagining of Wonder Woman hitting cinema screens for the first time in spring 2016, as part of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the superheroine has also beeny working on war time scenes for her own headline feature in Farnham’s Bourne Wood. A group of wealthy people prepare for their doomed voyage on the Titanic at the luxurious Great Fosters hotel, Egham. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, Thor: The Dark World sees Bourne Wood host a battle between two kingdoms, featuring a ‘substantial amount of stunts, special effects and approximately 300 extras’. All action shooting took place with Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench et al on MoD land near Elstead, where the childhood home of James Bond was created. The mountains and lake were later added by CGI.

While some locals may have been interested in taking this one into their own hands, Delta Point in Croydon was put through a Hollywood-style destruction for this instalment of the multimillion-dollar Batman movie series. Richard E Grant joined the Spice Girls at the National Trust’s Ham House for this 'musical' adventure. This is mostly apparent in the sometimes dodgy direction work, though it can only be imagined that the director was doing his best with the little he had. Cameron Diaz and Jude Law were among a host of stars who descended on Shere for the filming of romantic comedy The Holiday. Several shops and the 15th century pub, The White Horse, appear in the film. Scenes were also shot in Godalming. While Titsey Farm is probably best known for being transformed into an authentic French farmstead for Steven Spielberg's World War One epic War Horse, it also provided the farm location for the second Nanny McPhee film.The true story of the lifelong romance between novelist Iris Murdoch and her husband John Bayley, Iris stars Dame Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, Jim Broadbent - and the River Wey.

Starring Ben Miller, Celia Imrie, and Joan Collins, this independent British film is based on a series of best-selling children’s fantasy books by Georgia Byng, which are centred around the 11-year-old orphan, Molly. A big screen movie adaptation of the celebrated theatre classic by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. Rapunzel’s castle is a half-historical, half-new creation making use of Waverley Abbey near Farnham. Further scenes were also shot at Byfleet Manor in Byfleet. In this film starring American actor Bill Murray, there is a scene where he is involved in a police chase on Croydon flyover and Dingwall Road. The Queen’s Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse has been used in several films, and on this occasion doubled up as a Russian army airport in this Pierce Brosnan starring Bond classic. Filmed at Parkside House, which Marilyn Monroe had rented during her stay in England in 1956 when she was filming The Prince and The Showgirl with Laurence Olivier, the screen siren’s visit to Surrey has been immortalised with this star-studded film by Simon Curtis.

The story of the relationship between painter Dora Carrington and author Lytton Strachey in a World War One England, starring Emma Thompson, featured scenes shot at the Surrey beauty spot. We might not have any beaches in Surrey, but this didn’t stop the makers of this classic Carry On film using Frensham Ponds, to the south of Farnham, to represent the American coastline. Hollywood actress Sharon Stone was among the cast members who spent several days in the Founders Building at Royal Holloway which was used to double as a psychiatric Institute. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law reprised their roles as Holmes and Watson respectively, with Guy Ritchie filming at Richmond Park, Hampton Court Palace in East Molesey, and Bourne Woods near Farnham, among other locations. There's a bit of post-war xenophobia with the villains coming from an unnamed foreign country but looking an awful lot like Romany gypsy stereotypes. The noise of the sonic weapon, which we hear for lengthy sections of the film is extremely annoying. The character of Snowy really doesn't add much, other than reflecting how great Barton is and his obsession with getting a pint of Bitter.

The prequel to Snow White and The Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth reprised his role as The Huntsman with Waverley Abbey hosting the film crews between April and May 2015. False walls were added to the historic monument… The result feels very much like a proto-James Bond adventure, with it's suave British hero (once again played by Don Stannard), a very Fleming-style villain in Fouracada (Sebastian Cabot), and a diabolical plot that sees the bad guys using a powerful sonic weapon of mass destruction to help their un-specified country to achieve world domination. There's even a femme fatale who turns ally in the form of Tina (Jean Lodge), and several scenes in which the antagonists have an opportunity to kill Barton once and for all, but instead opt to put him in a perilous situation from which he has a chance to escape. It makes one wonder whether Ian Fleming was inspired in some part by Barton when creating Bond. This Cate Blanchett starring historical thriller was filmed in part at Waverley Abbey, Bourne Woods and Frensham Little Pond. The series was replaced from time to time by one about the adventures of an explorer. One episode was entitled "Plague on the Plateau". There was not much whinging to be heard in Virginia Water, as Harry spots a Hippogriff and later confronts the Dementors at the famous lake. Incidentally, Harry’s only surviving relatives, The Dursleys, live in Little Whinging, a fictional town located in Surrey...Still this is a really good movie. Its a wonderful mystery of the sort they don't make any more. Absolutely worth seeing if you get the chance. Appearing briefly as Dr Reeve’s village, A Matter of Life and Death stars one-time Puttenham resident David Niven as a British wartime aviator - blink and you’ll miss the picturesque village. The acting is again pretty terrible, never worse than in an appalling fight scenes. The story is much less interesting and involved than in the second film and to be honest, even at just over an hour it struggled to hold on to my attention. The ending is an anti-climax.
