If you’re trying to choose which formulation is better for your cat, discuss your options with your veterinarian. Wet Cat Food Benefits As a general rule, cat food is not good for your dog. It tends to be higher in protein, calories and fat, which is not ideal for your pooch. It may not affect them if they manage to get their muzzle into the cat bowl once or twice. But if they make it a regular habit, this could affect their health badly long-term. This type of food also contains quality fibre, which promotes the proper functioning of the entire intestinal system. What can you do to help your cat digest better?

We ai The two things almost everyone knows about cute cats from an early age is that they love mice and hate water. Many cats do indeed hate water, especially house cats. Cats in colder environments hate water, and you can clearly see it in the cat pictures below because they can’t regulate their own temperature quite as effectively when their fur is wet. The wet cat’s fur weighs them down as well, and because they are used to bathing themselves with their tongues, many might not even see sense in taking a bath. Yes, if your cat prefers wet food over dry, it is OK to feed only wet food, so long as the formula you choose is complete and balanced. However, kittens may benefit from having access to both wet and dry foods, to ensure you are supporting their nutritional needs as they grow. Can kittens eat regular cat wet food?

How do I feed a sensitive cat?

If you're worried because you've just adopted a cat yourself or you're an experienced owner having trouble with your cat's feeding habits, you've come to the right place. We know the frustration of your kitty suddenly deciding one day that the food they've happily eaten for years is now the most disgusting thing they've ever touched. Nutritional needs change as pets grow older. A diet for a growing kitten is very different to one formulated for a fifteen year old elderly cat. Some breeds such as Bengals or Savannahs are naturally more energetic. They need a lot of physical exercise and mental stimulation and therefore may require either a diet higher in fat or more food to ensure they have enough energy. Conversely, cats such as British Shorthairs, Ragdolls or Persians are more likely to be docile lap cats and will generally need a diet lower in fat, higher in protein to ensure they don’t gain significant amounts of weight and become unhealthy. What else should I consider about my cat's diet? Unlike kibble, wet cat food cannot be left out for cats to graze on all day long. “If wet cat food is left out for too long it may cause a stomach upset for your cat due to bacterial growth, and it also won’t be very appetizing once it has been left to dry up,” says Dr. Garner.

To compare the nutrients in wet food to those in dry food, convert the percentages of fat, protein, and fiber in wet food to a "dry matter basis." To find the dry matter basis, you can use these directions from the Tufts University Cummings Veterinary Medical Center, call the food manufacturer, or ask your veterinarian for help. There is some debate regarding whether one is better than the other. The BVA says 'there's not enough evidence to recommend one over the other, there are advantages to both. A vet will be able to recommend the most suitable diet.' This isn't exactly true, as food actually plays a minor part in plaque and tartar accumulation. If you're worried, we would recommend investing in wet food that promotes healthy teeth or mixing it with dry biscuits, so there's more texture for your kitty.

Most senior cats can eat kibble, says Dr. Jennifer Larsen, a board-certified veterinarian and professor of clinical nutrition at theUC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. However, dry foods tend to be three to four times more calorie-dense when compared to canned foods. Wet food is also higher in moisture, which helps support kidney function and can help manage symptoms of chronic kidney disease. For instance, Whiskas suggests that kittens should have one pouch a meal with kitten food pouches, two to four times a day. For adult kitties, it's 240 calories a day, which should be a mixture of dry and wet food, leaving out some in the day for moggies to graze on. Two meals (two pouches or one can) should be enough to sustain your adult cat. Is wet cat food healthy for teeth? If you think your four-legged friend might be overweight, book in a visit with your local vet for advice and an action plan. How much should I feed my cat? Justine Shotton of the BVA told us there is a risk of nutritional deficiencies with feeding raw food (eg low taurine in cats or high vitamin A), and risks associated with handling raw meats – both for pets and members of the household. To find out which are the best and worst cat food brands, in November 2021 we surveyed 3,122 Which? members who'd bought pet food recently and asked about their experiences with their chosen brand.
