You’ve devoted a large portion of your career to Disney, and I’d love to hear what your work means to you. For over 20 years Walt Disney tried to convince P.L. Travers and he finally succeeded in 1961 with Travers asking to keep the rights to script approval. Filming took place between May and September in 1963 with post production and animation taking a further 11 months. A very large part of our job is the conservation and preservation of assets and making them available. But one of our directives is to help the company keep its history alive and to make sure it’s accurate. We rely on our history so much—when you think about a film like Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, that came out in 1937. That’s a very old film, but because it’s animation and because it’s still so relevant to children today, whether it’s theme park attractions or streaming on Disney+, it’s really important that the history of that film is still available to our filmmakers, to our marketing and press and publicity and publishing people, to the people who make toys, and those who do attractions at the park. A well-indexed collection of our history is really important to Disney, probably more so than anywhere else I can think of. In the original book, she ran the sweet shop in the park and in the Broadway show they buy the letters to make the word "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from her. The book occupies a darker moral universe, one in which an alternative, more definitive ending is alluded to. Poppins is always looking in mirrors because she feels only tenuously connected to the physical world. (One sees why Sylvia Plath liked these books; TS Eliot, too.) What’s more, she has a cousin who is a snake and who, on the night of her birthday, gives her his shed skin and speculates that to eat and be eaten amount to the same thing when we are, “as one, moving to the same end”. It’s an extraordinary piece of paganism for a children’s book, prefiguring the end, when Poppins disappears with a “wild cry”, never to return. You don’t get that in Lassie Come Home.

Actor Stanley Holloway was considered for the role of Admiral Boom but instead he went on to star in the film My Fair Lady instead. The Mary Poppins Producers didn't inform Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks) or Matthew Garber (Michael Banks) about some elements that were going to happen. Jane Banks’ expression when Mary Poppins takes out many items from her carpet bag is genuine. Along with the scream when Mary Poppins gave the children medicines of different colors.Mrs Banks is depicted as a member of Emmeline Pankhurst Votes For Women suffrage movement. She was originally named Cynthia but was then changed to a more English sounding name Winifred. In the book, Mrs Banks is the one to interview Mary Poppins for the nanny position rather than Mr Banks. Enough of this complexity made it into the movie, however, to preserve its original flavour and even, perhaps, to deepen it. I have a theory that the Bird Woman is Poppins’s alter ego: despised and destitute, the mad old bat whom women like PL Travers were expected to become – invisible, husbandless and in need of a chin wax. She is the crone in the snow globe whom Poppins compels us to see. The Sherman Brothers composed the score to the film Mary Poppins but they were also involved in the development of the film and its storyline. They were the ones who suggested that the setting be changed to the Edwardian era from the 1930s when the book was set.In Walt Disney World, in the lost and found in Frontierland, there is a wooden leg with the word "Smith" written on it. This is a reference to the Mary Poppins Tea Party joke about "a man with a wooden leg named Smith" which is repeated by several characters. Cline’s also a passionate advocate for the preservation of these priceless cultural artifacts and brings genuine joy to what she calls her dream job. We had a chance to chat with her about the tireless but never boring work of an archivist, how her job has changed alongside filmmaking technology, and the movie that ignited her enchantment with all things Disney. Adriana Caselotti was the live-action reference model for the character of Snow White When filming The Princess Diaries in 2001, Julie Andrews discovered that Director Garry Marshall was living in the same house that she did when she was making Mary Poppins. Some of The Princess Diaries was also filmed on the same soundstage as Mary Poppins. Andrews knew this to be true because there is a plaque on the soundstage commemorating Poppins.
