Can the secret source known as "Deep Throat" tip the scales? A thrilling race against time begins... I’ve played both side in the game and it is really interesting how the game looks from each perspective. As the administration you feel pursued and harassed by these pesky journalists who keep turning over evidence you thought long suppressed. As the journalists you feel like the administration is an impenetrable wall of silence that you will never find your way through. Even after a few games that feeling remains. The game lets you inhabit the role of your faction, feeling the pressure that both sides must have felt during the real Watergate Scandal, and ultimately deciding how it will play out this time around.

game about the most notorious of all A card-driven 2-player game about the most notorious of all

The #1 Reddit source for news, information, and discussion about modern board games and board game culture. To start the game, one player takes on the role of the Washington Post editor, with the other controls the Nixon Administration. Watergate is played over a series of rounds, each of which has 3 phases: In June 1972, five men are arrested in Washington’s Watergate building. What looks like a third-rate burglary attempt on the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee induces journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post to start a thorough investigation. Over the following two years, they discover that the five men were directed from within the White House to spy on political opponents. As a consequence, in 1974 President Richard Nixon resigns from office to avoid impeachment. At the end of each round, which comprises four or five actions for each player, players gain any tokens on their side. Evidence tokens can be placed face-up by the editors connecting to the informants, or face down by the administration to obstruct the connection. The game ends when Nixon gains all five momentum tokens or if the editor connects two informants to the centre. [1] Release [ edit ] In WATERGATE, one player assumes the role of a Newspaper Editor, while the other embodies the Nixon Administration - each with a unique set of cards. The President of the United States is facing impeachment charges for criminal activities designed to undermine and smear his opponents. He fires a key figure tasked with investigating possible collusion between his administration and men accused of spying on his rivals and tampering with the democratic process. His relationship with the ‘fake news’ press is tetchy at best, paranoid at worst. And, to top it all, somewhere in the White House is a leak! Ok, full disclosure, I’m a massive fan of card driven historically themed games. Twilight Struggle is my favourite game of all time. I’m also a massive fan of this era of US history and this isn’t the first game that has given me the somewhat perverse pleasure of playing as the quintessential American bogeyman, Richard Nixon (Thanks 1960!). So, I guess my expectations for this little box of political intrigue were high. But boy did Matthias Cramer meet them! Watergate: White Box version features a stunning, thematic box cover of the original best-selling and award-winning Watergate game. Watergate does a great job of creating tension for both players as the giant tug-of-war match plays out each round. This is in large part due to the tough decisions that are required each round. The first of which will be how to use your card each turn: for its value or for its action?

The board is nice and sturdy, with really nice artwork and graphic design. I love the cards, they have a lovely soft finish and are slightly larger than standard playing card size. In Watergate the cards are the game really, so I’m happy so much attention to detail is paid. The photographs of the real people are included on each card, along with clear iconography, and some really nice flavour/history text on each one. The bottom of the card has more specific options, and these are usually Events. Each event marks a change in the game and usually that card is then removed from the game, instead of going onto your discard pile. These events can see informants being added to the board, tokens being drawn blind from the bag and placed on the board, or even preventing the other player from playing their own events in that round. The payoff for losing a card permanently can be huge, but has to be balanced with losing whatever power that card had for moving tokens instead, so it’s a really nice balancing act. The asymmetrical, easy to learn gameplay hit home with me right away and each subsequent play has been more enjoyable than the last. If you are looking for a card-driven, two-player game that fully embraces its theme, the grab a copy of Watergate from Capstone Games.

Much has been written about Nixon and the Watergate scandal. From historical texts to award winning films, the incident has been poured over from every conceivable angle. It even entered our vocabulary as we began to use the suffix “-gate” to refer to every scandal under the sun.

The Editor always places picture tiles face up (as recruited informants), while Nixon places them face down.Watergate is an asymmetric game. Nixon has to gain five momentum tokens to win, while the editor has to link any two informants to Nixon on the board, by placing connected evidence tokens on it. On your turn you play a card from your hand, and each card has two parts. The top part of the card lets you move any evidence token of a matching colour towards you by the number of steps written on the card, or you can choose to move either the round’s momentum token, or the initiative token towards you instead. The top half of cards are used for moving tokens, the bottom halves do something more, but may be lost if you do As Nixon, to move a face-down evidence token with the color shown on your card, simply flip the token face up and move it accordingly. (Remember that you can always look at face-down evidence tokens). If you are the Editor, place it face up (to create connections). If you are Nixon, place it face down (to disrupt connections). An informant is considered connected to Nixon if a thread coming from that informant's face-up picture tile runs all the way through face- up evidence tokens to Nixon's picture in the center (empty spaces and face-down evidence tokens disrupt connections). Only Nixon has conspirators. After Nixon uses the action part of a conspirator card, it goes to Nixon's discard pile.
