Our final comparison, ironically, has the new Sigma up against the firm’s new 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM A, the best performing full-frame 35mm lens in our database. Although it’s easier to make a high-speed 35mm than either a 24mm f/1.4 or a 18mm f/3.5, the Sigma 35mm is without doubt a superb performer optically and yet the new Sigma 18-35mm zoom comfortably achieves a higher DxOMark Score. The new zoom also has slightly higher levels of sharpness and has the edge in uniformity. Less important perhaps is the superior transmission score, while the differences between distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration are practically negligible. The lens seemed to do best within about 8 feet, but in the crucial portrait window of 8-15 feet (for full body shots) the focus accuracy dropped dramatically. This reveals one of the problems I (and others) have experienced with the lens. You can set an effective microadjustment value for a certain distance, but that value may not be the right one for other distances. This lens gives full frame equivalent 24 to 52 mm which means that now there is a zoom lens that will cover all the sizes you need for everyday indoor photos of family and friends that is brighter than any equivalent ff zoom that I know of. By the way, you may enable Movie Cropping and shoot “4K Crop” video with any lens, not just APS-C. I’m simply pointing out that — unlike still photos — 4K video on the R5 is higher quality than you may expect. No overheating in 4K Crop The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 is bulky, long, and weighs nearly two pounds (1 pound, 15 oz to be exact). This makes the lens somewhat cumbersome and heavy when shooting handheld on the R5. Requires an adapter

Need the speed? Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM in-depth review Need the speed? Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM in-depth review

I mainly use it indoors without flash for shooting people (that are usually moving) so with shutter speeds of up to 1/125. As I said earlier, there are two ways to look at this lens. Before examining those, however, let me first say that this is undoubtedly one of the finest crop specific lenses out there. APS-C has received relatively little development dollars from most manufacturers and as a result APS-C lenses tend to be budget options with variable apertures. This lens is as lovingly designed as other Sigma ART series lenses, and thus it is the Cadillac of crop sensor zooms. I’m happy that such a lens exists. It does indeed exist…should you buy it?Here is where the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 truly shines on the R5, though at first it may be hard to tell.

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Review - Photography Life

With a minimum focusing distance of 28cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.3, this lens is excellent for close-up photography. That 1.8 means i can keep my ISO as low as possible and the DOF although shalow is acceptable (18mm@2m DOF=93cm and 35mm@2m DOF=23cm) Because the Sigma is an APS-C lens, full-resolution 8K video isn’t possible. The R5 automatically removes 8K options from Movie Record Quality when mounted. Final thoughts The Sigma can focus down to around 12cm in front of the lens - making the 18-35mm a pretty flexible all-round lens. Photo by Barnaby Britton Why does dpreview perpetuate the myth that an f1.8 lens used on APSC sensors has the same light gathering power as an f2.8 lens on full frame? At the same ISO (or ASA for film ) and light

Note 05/18/2021 — an earlier version of this review incorrectly assumed f/1.8 on this lens was equal to f/1.8 full frame. This mistake has been corrected.) Variable focal lengthsMaybe the secret is in the use of this lens on the M4/3 mount. With a couple of electronic EF to M4/3 adapters you can have a FF fov equivalent 36-70mm f1.8 and a focal reduced (near aps-c) 26-50mm f1.2 FF fov equivalent as well.

18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM – Sigma UK

Convenient handling is achieved by incorporating internal focusing and zooming which prevents any change in the length of the lens when focusing and zooming. It is possible to use a specialist filter, such as a Circular Polarizer, as the front part of the lens does not rotate. The Sigma-35mm has a large, maximum aperture of f/1.8. This translates into a brighter image and less noise when used wide open. In terms of light gathering capabilities, the f/1.8 aperture is roughly equivalent to f/2.8 on a full frame lens. This makes the low-light performance of the Sigma similar to Canon’s excellent 24-70mm f/2.8 for less money.
