If you use an oil-based stain, it will seal the wood and will therefore not be able to absorb the wood oil. Wood Oil Or Wood Varnish? To get an indication of how the wood will look once oiled, test a similar piece of wood or discrete area by applying a wet cloth to the bare wood. There are also mixtures sold as finishing oils.
