Due to the continued release of new variants in Brazil, the Master System is considered by many video gaming publications to be the longest lived gaming console in video games history, a title it took from the Atari 2600. It was engineered by the same team, [25] including Hideki Sato and Masami Ishikawa, who had worked on the II and later led development of the Sega Genesis. The Master System also has gore if you enter a code, although it lacks some of the finishing moves (including the spiked pit) and it lacks the number of buttons to make a fighting game truly playable, but GOD DAMN IT.

Europe, by contrast, received over 300 licensed games, including 8-bit ports of Genesis games and PAL-exclusive releases. A brand-new generic (non-OEM) replacement power supply unit (PSU) for the following Sega models: Sega Mega Drive 1, Sega Genesis, Sega Mega CD 1, Sega Mega CD 2, Sega Mastersystem 1, Sega Mastersystem 2 and Sega Gamegear. The bundles were named differently in Europe, with the Master System bundle being the equivalent of the budget Base System, followed by the Master System Plus and the Super System. Though the Master System had newer, improved hardware, it failed to overturn Nintendo's significant market share advantage in Japan and North America. It was first released in Japan on October 6, 1990, [9] in North America and Europe in 1991, and in Australia and New Zealand in 1992. It had a slower pace (which goes in the face of it’s main selling point), there were no loops and it generally required more thought. The Sega Master System was the first of Sega's consoles to see widespread distribution outside of Japan, and went head-to-head with the Nintendo Entertainment System (the international version of the Famicom) across the world.

As a result of this marketing and of Nintendo's less effective early approaches in Europe, the Master System began to attract European developers. In 1987, amid struggling sales in the US, [29] Sega sold the US distribution rights for the Master System to the toy company Tonka, which had no experience with electronic entertainment systems.
