Description

While the third of the three stories could have been shorter, this is a charming and funny book which concludes with some moving life lessons and a delightful final image.

The illustrations and colour scheme are to die for, Bad Nana is hilarious and I felt a true kinship with her. Bad Nana always dresses in black, from the top of her head to the tip of her shoes and on super-special occasions she adds a sparkly pink turban. Whilst the first chapter delves into Jeanie’s family, friends and lots of fab details about her Bad Nana, chapter 2 ‘Park Life’ is where Sophy Henn shows us what Nana is really made of. My son read this book and he questioned me why Jeanie hate Jack so much and I explained to him that maybe her younger brother did all of the things she didn’t like just like he didn’t like when his younger sister kicked down his Jenga tower as he finished building it. Henn packs a lot of emotion into this chapter, we really feel for the characters as they tiptoe around the museum trying to avoid the grumpy museum man, and then there’s poor Lydia.

So here's the thing: if you aren't bothered by shifting fonts mixed with highlighter pink everything? her first book, was nominated for both the Kate Greenaway Medal and shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize in 2015. Each chapter reads as a short standalone adventure of Nana's mischievous behaviour; perfect for children starting to read on their own, or as a class shared read or bedtime story to chuckle over. So when Jeanie and her class go on a school trip to possibly the most boring local history museum in the world, it’s no surprise that Bad Nana manages to make it a lot more interesting than anyone expected.

Bold, fun drawings illustrate the mischievous adventures of cheeky Nana and sweet Jeanie and their extended family. Bad Nana has been banned from the line-dancing club for “being disruptive in the freestyle section”, has a cat with PINK hair and carries a walking stick that’s used for everything BUT walking. They are certain their fun will come to an end when the house is sold - but their new neighbour is full of surprises. Overall, it's huge fun, shows family love, has some really cool designed characters in simple drawing graphic style that's really effective and bold artwork throughout the whole book with popping colours for contrast. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!

Wickedly smart old lady who cannot stop before an injustice (normally caused by a stuffy old white man of authority or a privileged snotty girl! It is at this grandma’s house that Jeanie likes to spend lots of her time, and it would be even better if annoying Jack didn’t have to spend lots of his time there too.Her subsequent titles have gone on to great success, and Sophy was chosen as the World Book Day illustrator in 2015. As a primary school teacher, I often find myself biting my lip trying hard not to laugh at something a child might have said or done. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. Bad Nana is a deliciously wicked new series for ages six and up, told through the eyes of 7 3/4-year-old Jeanie.
