Many celebrities belonged to the Golden Dawn, such as the actress Florence Farr, the Irish revolutionary Maud Gonne, the Irish poet William Butler Yeats, the Welsh author Arthur Machen, and the English authors Evelyn Underhill and Aleister Crowley.

You can read it from cover to cover but you are more likely to take it a chapter at a time as almost every paragraph has ideas to ponder and penetrate. By the mid-1890s, the Golden Dawn was well established in Great Britain, with over one hundred members from every class of Victorian society. This was followed by translation into German ( Die großen Arcana des Tarot : Meditationen, ISBN 978-3906371054).as the author is not tired to repeat) is ultimately a failure and results more often than not in a kind of syncretistic theosophy ("pseudo-religion" as Guenon rightly dubbed it). No longer associated with the SRIA after 1902, Mathers continued to oversee a few temples until his death, when his wife, Moina, assumed supervision. But not only this, he has given us a compendium of psychology, sociology, politics, theology, philosophy and hermeticism that could offer the new millennium – in all its potential horror – the wisest of guides. Godfrey Dowson's cards in The Hermetic Tarot reveal a combination of detail and symbolism that capture the mood and sense of each pictorial image.

The author, who published the book anonymously and posthumously, exudes an unmistakable connection to God as well as rational and moral rightness. It is a series of epistles; it is spiritual encouragement; it is an encyclopedic tome of spiritual and magical matters; it is a profound critique of life and magic and the human being; it is one of my holy books.

As far the minor arcana, the court cards are really great and the pip cards are too, this deck is in my opinion a sort of hybrid: in many sense similar to a Marseille deck but also has references to the RWS, Thoth tarot and Golden Dawn style. Corresponding alchemical symbols for the four elements and astrological symbols are embedded into each card to denote the attributions.Dowson Included elemental dignities, astrological attributions, kabbalistic relationships, and angelic names in the deck. The Golden Dawn system was based on hierarchy and initiation (similar to Masonic lodges) and the grade structure was based on the S. Dowson is very public with the same information Waite either hid, obscured, or otherwise did not include. The unknown author is actually a fellow (I've heard that his name is Valentin Tomberg) who was deeply involved in the Golden Dawn/Rosicrusion/Rudolf Steiner crowd and then converted to Catholicism - perhaps becoming a monk (not sure about that).

There are also word clues in the cards because the card titles give more insight into possible meanings for the cards.According to sources that differ regarding the actual date, sometime between 1901 and 1913 Mathers renamed the branch of the Golden Dawn remaining loyal to his leadership to Alpha et Omega. Complex and stark, the black-and-white images are jam-packed with alchemical, astrological and Qabalistic symbols easily recognized by those familiar with those and other esoteric systems. Thus, if the love inquiry is more focused on what greater forces are at play in a seeker’s love life, the Hermetic Tarot can answer that better than the standard decks. This is the sort of book you read and read, and then your brain is full and needs some time to digest what it's read. It's giving me a great education because he makes hundreds of references (The dude is uber-erudite) to things I've never heard or things I've heard of but never took the time to understand - he inspires me to look up his various references -- just so I can know what the heck he is talking about.
