While I appreciated the rulebook giving options to make the game harder or easier, I do fear that they will age out of this one pretty quickly. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the very first time we played she drew a card that let her rebuild our destroyed wall. Though promo for the game does say, “preschoolers can play independently,” there are a few special rules such as specific monster movement that will likely require some reminders or help for younger ones. Both my three-year-old and my six-year-old enjoyed the game immensely (and keep asking to play again and again, which is always a great sign).

Send out your brave defenders to match the color and shape of the space where a monster is to catch it. Other times, though, some bad enemy draws (especially if you have to draw multiple in the same turn), can throw everything off and quickly lead to game over. I must keep reminding him that she is not quite ready for Castle Panic, and let’s just keep playing My First Castle Panic with her for now. Streamlined gameplay teaches strategic thinking, as players work to match colors and shapes, all while planning ahead, taking turns, and cooperating. Playing Castle Panic (a fantastic game) with my 4-year-old felt more like giving instructions to an unwilling robot. One was a variant of Pretty, Pretty Princess, and that has been quite popular, but mostly just for taking the jewelry and making daddy wear it around the house.

My First Castle Panic teaches young gamers three shapes, three colors, how to match, how to ask for help, and how to take turns. This is hardly a deal breaker, but for a game with a target demographic of children ages 4-7, I would have thought the cardboard would be a little tougher. Almost all of the reviews on Board Game Quest are from review copies of a game provided by the publisher. I teach math for a living and enjoy time with my super awesome wife, awesome kids and almost as awesome dog. The “My First” take on board games has been a fantastic way to introduce our young ones to games we know and love.
