All lawnmowers have a cutting width, and that can range in size from as low as 30cm (12") up to around 53 cm(21") This mower has a 39cm cutting width and a 40-litre grass collection bag which makes it a good option for small to medium sized lawns up to 400sq meters.That said, if you simply want to get the job done and you’re not fussed about stripes, ignore this criticism. There are various mechanisms used to control that lever - sometimes the stiff wire link disappears in to the engine casing and is controlled from something internal, and other times it's from a curved 'flap' which sits close to the fan at the top of the engine - the faster the engine spins, the further the paddle (which is in the air flow) moves. Also, the wheels are set wider than the cutting width. This means the mower won’t cut right up to the edges. As a result, you’ll need to finish the edges with a grass strimmer or some other edging tool. So, if you push your mower down one length of your garden, the cutting width is the width of grass your mower will actually cut. A mower with a 39 cm cutting width for example, will cut 39cm of grass, so to cover a metre will take 3 passes of your mower. Assembling this mower is pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, the instruction manual does a pretty poor job of explaining how to do it. This made pushing it up and down the lawn a breeze, even on inclines. It’s not the easiest to manoeuvre around tight curves but then, no lawn mower is. The Mountfield SP164 is a step up from the HP164 with the addition of self-propelled drive. The mower matches your walking speed and takes the effort out of pushing the lawn mower across long grass or uneven ground. However, for many people, pushing them up and down the lawn can be tiring work, especially when mowing up and down inclines. Yes, it's very unlikely that the spring has weakened in such a short time, but that's not to say that a wee link somewhere hasn't failed or loosened.
