There were also various other forms released on the same type of platform such as Motown Chartbusters 150 Hits of gold and boxed sets. In total 12 where released in the UK spanning 15 years from 1967 to 1982. All 12 were top 30 UK chart entries, the second volume of British Motown Chartbusters hit no.8 in January of 1970, in the same year volume 3 spent six weeks at the no.2 position, before reaching no.1. In 1971 volume 5 went to no.2 and in 1973 volume 8 went to no.9 The special relationship that developed between the Tamla Motown label and its British devotees was in full effect once again in October 1970.The Isley Brothers only recorded songs for Motown for a short time, but they made a mighty impact with this pleading Holland–Dozier–Holland gem. It would go on to be covered countless times in the following decades. 52: Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) (Marvin Gaye)

The Spinners would go off to record more for Atlantic Records, but you can understand why Motown wanted to get in on the ground floor of this talented vocal group. This tune, co-written by Stevie Wonder, was the group’s most successful song for Motown, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard R&B chart. 53: This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You) (The Isley Brothers) Even so, Stevie Wonder out-charted the Supremes, with 11 of his albums reaching the Top 20, across a total of 121 weeks. Those ranged from 1969’s My Cherie Amour to 1985’s In Square Circle, and included two which stopped only one slot shy of the summit: Songs In The Key of Life and Hotter Than July. They were re-issued from 1997 by the budget label, Spectrum. The clear differences between the two releases are the logos on the disc and cover, the original release has the Tamla Motown logo, the re-release has the Motown logo. Diana Ross also had 11 albums occupy the Top 20, spending 106 weeks there in total. Those hits included her 1973 duet set with Marvin Gaye (which significantly outperformed its U.S. chart ranking) and her own 20 Golden Greats, which climbed to No. 2 at the end of ’79. One of the greatest duets ever, this Lionel Richie-penned tune topped the Billboard charts for nine weeks. It’s a perfect marriage of two distinct and talented voices. The movie for which it was written is largely forgotten today, but the song will be remembered forever. 54: It’s a Shame (The Spinners)

An early marker of success for up and coming super-producer Norman Whitfield, this irresistible single was one of just two US Hot 100 entries for a girl group signed to a record company awash with them. Perhaps The Velvelettes needed more attention, or to shout louder – but they surely had talent to spare. 47: There’s A Ghost In My House (R Dean Taylor)

44: Take Some Time Out For Love (The Isley Brothers)

Ten Supremes albums spent a total of 112 weeks in the Top 20 from 1964-77, with seven of them making the Top 10 and two climbing to the peak. Their 20 Golden Greats stayed at the top for seven weeks, longer than any of the eight other Motown LPs which reached Number One. The group also had the second-longest chart-topping title, Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations, which reigned for four weeks. The first nine albums were Top 15 UK Albums Chart entries, whereas the later albums from 10 to 12 did not chart. The second volume of British Motown Chartbusters rose to No. 8 in January 1970. In the same year, Volume 3 spent six weeks at the No. 2 position, eventually reaching No. 1. Volumes 4 and 5 also hit No. 1. In 1971 Volume 6 went to No. 2 and, in 1972 and 1973, both Volumes 7 and 8 went to No. 9. [3]
