Runs on only 2 standard AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, or AC adapter (AD-17) After researching this, it does seem that the H1n has a hardwired low-cut filter starting at 100hz and rolls off to -35dB at 1hz.

And at another day conference, I put it on an extra mic stand by the people on stage speaking, to record their talks. I also recorded what came out of the mixing desk on another machine, but used the audio from the H1n as it was clearer. When testing the X/Y microphones, we noticed that the audio would distort when speaking too close to the device. We also took the device outside when there was a moderate amount of wind, and our recordings were dominated by wind noise. It replaces the Zoom H1. That was popular with ultra low budget filmmakers because it was small and extremely affordable, though it had some frustrating limitations. How does the new device compare? Why’s it useful? Recording audio to an SD card on the H1n is straightforward. After you set the levels, all you need to do is press the Record button. The main recording screen allows you to change the audio format, enable the Lo-Cut and Limiter features, and engage Auto Level discussed above. When you’re not recording, you can access even more options by pressing the Stop (Option) button: I think the original was really meant for musicians, which is why it doesn’t work well outdoors. Now Zoom have redesigned it and added some specific filmmaking features.

Both devices have X/Y style microphones that record up to 24-bit audio files. The PCM-A10’s microphones are adjustable for fine-tuning your audio recording whereas the Zoom H1n’s microphones are non-adjustable. It can be directly connected to a laptop or desktop computer and used as an external microphone. Battery Life: Carry extra batteries at all times I also use it for any song ideas I have, to record my singing, guitar or piano. The quality is good enough to put it into Studio One to start a new song. I pull the card out, put it into an adaptor and plug it into my laptop and transfer the audio. (Transfering audio directly from the machine is MUCH slower.) I was hoping that a firmware update was available to allow for higher storage cards but, as of August 2020, there is still no support for them. The slim design is just big enough to house some simple controls that the user can work to easily navigate settings along the lit display. The two microphones are well shielded from any bumps with the molded-in guard, and a threaded mount to attach it to a microphone stand is thankfully built in. It’s powered by 2 AAA batteries, which should last about 10 hours during normal use.

You may want to use a higher microphone sensitivity if you realize that your interviewees talk softly. In this article, we will show you how to get up and running with the Zoom H1n. You’ll learn how to register the H1n, format the SD card, and how to record audio. Follow the sections below to get started. You can also set the H1n to auto-record, pre-record, and self-time, making sure you always capture the moment.An3.5mm stereo mic/line input lets you record with your external microphones or other sound sources, and supplies plug-in power (2.5 volts). Connect headphones via the 3.5mm headphones output with dedicated volume control. You can also use the H1n’s built-in speaker to listen to your recordings. The H1n is great for someone just starting field recording. It is quiet enough to record nature, small enough to take anywhere and supports plug-in-powered, external microphones. Recording on the H1n took some getting used to. I am accustomed to pressing record once to enter standby recording mode, and pressing record again to actually start recording. The H1n is always in standby recording mode. The 1.25-inch monochrome LCD display is bright and easily visible even in direct sunlight. The menus are easy to navigate, and any first-time user can get the hang of with a little bit of practice. Just above the LCD display is an analog input volume knob to control recording levels, which is an excellent feature—instead of using buttons to control volume, the knob is a nice silent way to adjust on the fly while recording is in progress. Now I'm using it via the usb cable to my computer as the mic for my Skype sessions, and any computer screen recordings I do. I bought the kit, so I have the mini stand which has extension legs (I hadn't realised) & makes it a great tabletop mic.

Like its predecessor, the H1n can record a beautiful stereo image from its internal microphone. But unlike the H1, it’s genuinely usable outdoors. The booming wind noise that plagued the old model has disappeared. You do still need a furry windshield: the Redhead works well (though it partly obscures the screen and dial) or you could use Zoom’s own WSU-1. As with the H1, the microphone configuration is X-Y (a crossed pair) which provides a good stereo image. The microphone capsules themselves look similar but they’re better protected. Like the old model, the H1n can record MP3 or WAV with a maximum quality of 96KHz 24 bit. The H1n’s USB port provides a digital output of the stereo mix and allows data to be send to and from your computer. It also allows the H1n to be used as a USB microphone and a microSD card reader. To reduce the low frequency in your recordings, set your preferences using the “Low Cut” button. The “Limiter” and “Auto Level” buttons give the user further control over the quality of sound being recorded. The "Limiter" button will limit the audio signal to a specific threshold, making sure the audio that you record remains undistorted. The "Auto Level" button keeps the audio signal consistent by increasing or decreasing the audio gain. The quality od the recording is reasonably good with options of 16 bit and 24 bit recording in 48 (16 bit addiotional 44.1 khz) and 96 khz as well as mp3 recording (up to 320 kbps). There is some marginal noise present but at the price range i think it's purely negligible.
