Well, one of the many great advised a received on this forum was one written on this forum and stated this: " You might consider just reading the first 15 [puzzles] of each chapter, then quickly do them again, the same day.

Chess is 99% tactics – and if you want to win more games, nothing works better than training tactics.By far and away, the quickest and most effective way to improve your chess performance is to increase your tactical skill so that at a glance you are able to see the typical mating patterns and material-winning tactical motifs that so often decide a game. The author is a Dutch IM, trainer and youth coach of the Dutch Chess Federation, so has ample experience and knows whereof he speaks.

Remember, these puzzles were carefully chosen and/or created by humans that know what they're doing. The book might not have mentioned the Re5 option as it's probably trying to show you how a player can get positional or material advantage from a pinned piece. It helps you in identifying weak spots in the position of your opponent, in recognizing patterns of combinations, and in visualizing tricks. The positions feel better than the computer-discovered puzzles on some of the online sites I use, like Chess Tempo or Lichess. n\nThis book would benefit not just the beginners of the title, but also inexperienced players, casual and lower rated players.

Not purely puzzle book, but 1200 or so Tactics positions can be treated like a puzzle book if you ignore the text. Thus it’s more a book about familiarising one’s self with tactical patterns and improving tactical awareness, vision and basic calculation skills. There are two types of books on tactics, those that introduce the concepts followed by a some examples, and workbooks that contain numerous exercises.

He explains all the basic concepts, and provides you with a huge amount of exercises for each theme and each chess piece. Black has the luxury of choosing between two moves that not only save both his threatened pieces, but which also win the white rook. Not that they necessarily needed their own dedicated chapters, but I think they should've been included in the glossary at least. On a slight tangent, I find this to be an infuriatingly common slip-up with chess literature — hide the damn spoilers! The introductory texts for each chapter feel a bit perfunctory, and mostly consist of a page or three and some examples. A wonderful mix of various tactical motifs and a great assembly of exercises that really should be in every chess book collection. Winning Chess sacrifices (and combinations, along with 1001 Brilliant ways to Checkmate from the same authors) - Fred Reinfeld.
