Kane, if you read this, next time you go to Italy may I suggest spending some time at La Sapienza in Rome or the University of Bologna? I genuinely hope he continues the story of Rome’s conquest of Greece through the Seleucid wars and the Third Macedonian War. Impale your holy sword at a location where it deals 1226 damage over 5 seconds to all nearby enemies.

There isn't always someone on our side to help us get through the day or to help us through tough times at work or at home, but if we want our teams to be there through thick and thin we have to realize that we're all human. Even if I disliked Flamininus and some of the soap-operaish theatrics that went with him, the broader story continued to hold my attention. It could be because of the similarity of character names, place names, or perhaps just too many characters, whatever the reason, you have to go back and re-read a chapter you've just read because you find yourself going "huh? His accents and storytelling skill brought this already brilliant piece of historical fiction to life. Firstly I must say that I have always been a big fan of Ben Kane and have thoroughly enjoyed his previous novels.

For whatever reason, and I have my suspicions as to why but will keep them to myself, this particular volume falls somewhat short when compared to other Ben Kane books.

My quibble is that, as is typical from authors from the English speaking world, he never bothered to consult Italian historians. The major battle is treated more or less accurately, the basic problem being that Phillip committed half his troops to go to the top of the hills, and for whatever reason only committed the second half of his troops somewhat later. How had the Scottish tribes reacted to the mighty structure which dwarfed anything they’d seen before?

It is quite mind-blowing to think that tens of thousands and men were commanded by word of mouth with precision. Set: Every use of Blessed Hammer that hits an enemy reduces the cooldown of Falling Sword and Provoke by 1 second. Following the Macedonian/Roman war from the point of view of foot soldiers from both sides seemed like a good idea but there was a lack of depth in both main characters and I struggled to care about their fates. Ben Kane is the author of nine consecutiveSunday Timestop ten bestsellers, with over million copies of his books sold around the world.Narration is very well done, too--the complexity of every character is well expressed in tone and accent. The novel continued on from the strong finishing ‘Clash of Empires’ where the Phalanx met the Legions at Atrax. The writing takes the reader through the political and personal history of the campaign, the negotiations and the treachery between the military leaders and their followers. AN EMPIRE ON THE EDGE Both leaders know the victor will rule Greece, and both armies will do everything in their power to claim the ultimate prize.

The thrilling follow-up to Clash of Empires – centred around the climax of the Roman invasion of Greece – from Ben Kane, the master of historical fiction. It had no real structure to it until the midpoint or later and ended on nothing more than a skirmish. Told from the POV of the two opposing generals and two of their soldiers, Ben gives us a wide scope of the everyday lives of all involved. Enemies take 300 - 400% increased damage from your Blessed Hammers for 10 seconds after you hit them with a Blind, Immobilize, or Stun. During the descriptions of sacrificing animals it is almost possible to smell their fear and detect their nervous reactions to someone wielding a knife or sword and cutting their throats expertly or inexpertly causing great and unnecessary pain.Kane has created a big set of characters and we live with them in the heart of the Macedonian phalanxes with Demetrius and his comrades and we get to stand shoulder to shoulder in the iron-hard lines of the Roman legions with Felix and Antonius. The story also follows the leaders, Flamininus and Phillip of Macedon, and it shows the problems our ordinary soldiers had thanks to "onion heads" of NCOs, while Felix also had to put up with getting on the wrong side of the Legatus Galba, who also happened to seriously annoy Flamininus. This is the follow on story to Clash of the Empires, which I highly recommend that you read first as you get a solid background of the characters in this story. Sure, there are firable offenses that may not be worth falling on a sword for if you didn't participate, but there are times, in work and in life, where falling on a sword and taking the punches when it wasn't your fault is tactful and worth it. The ground you fall on becomes superheated for 6 seconds, dealing 310% weapon damage as Fire per second to all enemies who pass over it.
