Description

It is just over 25 years since the release of Time Out of Mind, in September 1997, rekindled Bob Dylan’s career. He was then 56, a legend with a glorious past behind him and a much less auspicious future. The 1990s had not been good to him. The songs had stopped flowing. He had not released any original material since the rightly slated Under the Red Sky, in 1990, recording just two albums of traditional material, Good as I Been to You (1992) and World Gone Wrong (1993).

Much more compellingly, there is stunning warm-up rendition of traditional ballad “Water Is Wide”, whilst a selection of thoroughly fired-up, often radically rearranged live takes of Time Out of Mind songs recorded between 1998 and 2001 makes a compelling case for a release focusing on Dylan’s potent live shows from this era. When it was released in 1997, Bob Dylan’s thirtieth studio album, Time Out of Mind, was hailed as a masterpiece.

Disc One of Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 premieres 2022 mixes, by Michael H. Brauer at Brauer Sound Studios, of the eleven original recordings on Time Out of Mind. In his liner notes for the set, Steven Hyden writes, “The album itself has been remixed to sound more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room, without the effects and processing that Lanois applied later. It’s not meant to replace the Time Out of Mind that won all of those Grammys a quarter-century ago; it’s a reimagining, an alternate view of a great work of art. If the original album remains mythic and enigmatic, this Time Out of Mind puts you in close proximity to the players.” The Time Out of Mind (2022 Remix) disc will be available in immersive audio, a first for a Bob Dylan recording.I just don’t know what I’m gonna do / I was all right til I fell in love with you.” He wants to get to that city fast, and get her out of his head, if that’s a thing that can ever happen—and I don’t think it can. Dylan retooled this song into ‘Till I Fell In Love With You’. This collection, which stretches to 5 CDs in the full box set, covers not just the 11 songs which were released as the original album, but also those songs which missed the cut, some of which made it onto subsequent releases. As with previous Bootleg Series releases, this provides the listener with a real insight into the whole process of developing and recording the songs, and that whole journey towards the final product that we have enjoyed for so many years. However, whilst there will be an inevitable and understandable focus on the new outtakes and alternate versions of the songs on discs 2 and 3, the significance of the 2022 remix should certainly not be overlooked. The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy's highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series takes a fresh look at 'Time Out of Mind', Dylan's mid-career masterpiece, celebrating the album and its enduring impact 25 years after its original release on September 30, 1997. 'Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. 17' follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions featuring Dylan (vocals, guitar, and piano), Daniel Lanois (guitar and organ), Tony Garnier (bass) and Tony Mangurian (drums and percussion) through incandescent live renditions (also previously unreleased) showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. Not Dark Yet is a centre point of the album and regarded by so many fans, including myself, as one of his finest songs, and the two further versions included here are undoubtedly absolute highlights. The first is a much more upbeat version, which is great but not really in keeping with the vibe of the song, and the other aligned more with the dark and sombre feel of the album version. But, having said that, neither comes close to the superior version on the album.

With that in mind, the first disc in this 5CD offering is a new 2022 remix of the original release, by engineer, Michael Brauer, who says he was trying to capture something that had more of a feel of what was going on in the room, with less additional processing. To be fair, with the new version, Brauer has nailed it – the remix is sharper, crisper and live-sounding; the performances are more intimate and immersive. It’s like you’re sat in the studio with Dylan and his band.

And when the mortality of so many significant figures has blighted the music industry over recent times, this seems such an opportune time to revisit and re-evaluate this Dylan album given that it was released at a time when he had his own brush with death.
