The price of virtual currency bitcoin has topped the $5,000 mark for the first time, rising by 7 per cent within the last day and 75 per cent over the last month.
In sterling the cryptocurrency is now worth £3,936: just four years ago in October 2013, it was worth £100.
The latest surge in bitcoin prices comes days after the price dropped over $600 in minutes to around $4,200 after Russian authorities announced plans to block access to the 'dubious' websites of exchanges for cyrptocurrencies like bitcoin.
