Overall, I loved rereading this book as the illustrations is immersive, the language sparks imagination, and the plot generates discussion. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. Grandmothers are exempt from female beauty standards, and the grandmother of The Witches does not conform to feminine expectations of behaviour. This despite my own experience of scooter riding (I never had one as a kid for the SAME REASON my father never had one).

For example, the rhyming of complex words is written cleverly and with repetition which makes it more accessible for young children. The story rhymes a lot which can help kids think of other rhyming words and it adds to their vocabulary. Mister Magnolia is a man who is kind to everyone but has nothing for himself, which teaches children that kindness costs nothing.Encourage them tell it to you in their own words, with some words or phrases from the story, using the pictures to help them. Quentin Blake has been illustrating poetry throughout the whole of his career, creating illustrations for such varied poets as Roald Dahl and William Shakespeare. Using pens or paint and paper, children can make a picture of a favourite part of the story, show their picture to someone else and talk about it. Mr Magnolia is a wonderful rhyming story about the marvellous Mr Magnolia who has a trumpet, two lovely sisters, a pond, some owls and a dinosaur.

Magnolia the title character of the book has only one boot and we follow him through his day with his fantastical family, friends and pets whilst he wears only one boot. It celebrates his illustrations for popular nursery rhymes and children's favourites like The Owl and the Pussycat and Jabberwocky. The book is best read aloud and appealing colourful illustrations include lots of details that children love to pick out when the story is being read. Ergo, I think this book would be a great opportunity to not only introduce rhymes, but to also extend open-ended questions for young children. Angelica’s small chums are enchanted by the contents of her pockets which include mice, cheese, hankies, frying pans, umbrellas and much more!
