On the iO Series, you press the cleaning mode button, under the display on the brush handle. You can change the mode prior to turning the brush on. The vast majority of models, the Vitality series being the main exception, also have a third type of movement called pulsations.

Besides Oral-B, the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 is one of the only electric toothbrushes in this price range offering a pressure sensor. What Sets the Oral-B 7000 Apart?

Overall Take

Any good toothbrush starts with bristles. This is especially true of electric toothbrushes, which use movement to get the job done. Some models use the power of sonic technology to make as much as 31,000 brush strokes per minute, driving fluid between your teeth. Others use 3-D cleaning action to surround each tooth, providing around 8,800 rotations and 20,000 pulsations per minute. The power button is illuminated whilst the cleaning mode has a grey coloured arrow that points down. Dentists recommend you brush for two minutes, twice a day. But how do you know when the two minutes are up? With an electric toothbrush, you’ll have the benefit of a timer. Some models offer a feature that forces the toothbrush to pause slightly every 30 seconds to remind you to move to the next quadrant. The principle is that you spend 30 seconds for each quadrant of the mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left).

You have a dedicated cleaning mode button too. Press this to change cleaning modes on the 9000. With the 5000 you have to press the power button multiple times.

Type 3742

At the end of the 2 minute cleaning cycle, the motor in the brush pauses and restarts briefly three times. Below, is a list of models we have compared to one another, plus some that we have compared to their Sonicare equivalents. Interestingly, despite the similar design, the Smart 6 is actually part of a range of brushes that includes the Smart 4 and 5 that sit below the Genius range. Both brushes are fairly slim and lightweight in hand, but the Pro 1000 does not have the large amount of grip on the front of the handle like the 1500. Instead, it has just a small amount at the top where the power button is located. Sonicare brushes use high frequency vibrations for cleaning, which some prefer, but the performance is similar. Ultimately Oral-B takes the edge for its balance of proven cleaning technology, important features, and reasonable prices.
